Someone tell me. I have no clue.
I will say that even though the program's immediate prospects look good, it only has one recruit past 2011 (and I'm just assuming she will still come). It's far from a slam dunk that Minnesota will remain a top 10 program.

No. Air is vastly overrated.

Who are the candidates?
Are they making a run at Iowa State's Christy Johnson?

They'll take a run at Christy, but she's in a really good place right now. Timing isn't right.
I believe that Swanson will get an interview. Might even get the job.
I still think Carlston is a frontrunner. Don't know if he even wants to leave OSU right now, but if he's ever going to get that job, now's the time.

Are there any top assistants that are ready to make the jump? Is Salima applying to places or is she content right now as the asst?

As of a couple weeks ago, they hadn't approached Carlston - which I think is a big mistake. I don't know if he would take it right now, but we'll see. I think the timing (as brought up previously) of Hebert retiring this year might have surprised everyone who COULD have been positioning themselves behind the scenes in order to get this job. I get asked the same question as this thread is named, quite often & no real word it getting out. It's obviously a big hire for the University and program, with MBB rolling and trying to resurrect the fb program as well with their new coach... In regards to Johnson-Lynch - don't see it happening, unless they are willing to pay her close to what Hebert was making, which isn't going to happen

And to approach Carlston, or any other current head coach, would require going the the appropriate AD's office. Which may have taken a couple of days. And the OSU athletic department may have been too busy trying to ensure their football players would be eligible to play in this year's bowl game to worry about a volleyball question. ;D Also, the holidays don't really help move things along quickly. I believe they would like to have everything tied up by mid-January. But, I hope they make an announcement sooner than later. While I am a little more calm about this than (R)uffda, I have missed out on a few hours of sleep over this. Hey, Mike! Will you pull an Urban Meyer and reverse your decision? Just for a year? Please!

I am actually very calm. I have accepted our fate.
But I am curious and that's why I posted.

I agree with pancake83 in terms of the timing of Mike's announcement playing into the difficulty of them getting who they may have wanted. I say this because I've heard that Minnesota is very interested in Hugh McCutcheon, but he won't leave the WNT prior to the 2012 Olympics in London. If Mike had hung in there a couple of years, then I think this would've been a 'slam dunk' for Minnesota, but that's not the case. I've also heard a lot of discussion about Geoff and all the reasons he would or wouldn't take the job if he was approached. The thing is, I haven't heard Geoff say anything, which means it's just talk at the moment.

Why would a coach leave OSU for Minnesota? I know Mike left Champaign for Minneapolis, and that there is some attraction to a bigger city for some, but it just seems like it'd cause more problems for Geoff than would be offset by an potential advantages.

I don't know Carlston, but I'm thinking through the pros and cons:
Minnesota: - Personal ties as an alumnus and years of coaching in the state - History of volleyball success - Gets pretty much every top recruit from a state with good high-end prep volleyball - Family ties?
Ohio State - Current life of last 7 years in the state - 7 productive years building professional (recruiting) relationships in the state - First choice for most players in one of the very best prep states in the nation (but Penn State also close enough to steal players) - Entering year 3 of his own program
Tough choice. I'd want to stick in Ohio.

I don't know where Geoff's family is from -- or where he is from, for that matter. I know he coached HS VB at Hopkins in the 90s (was he Hagen's coach? I forget) and was pretty much based in Minnesota until the Ohio job. His wife is from here.
If it's Scott, he'll be looking for assistants. Laura is getting out of coaching, I hear.
I hope Nao stays.
