As a long-time member of this forum I rarely check or even post at this point because the Odin has pretty much lost control of the board. Most posts run on and on with very little content to related to volleyball. VolleyTalk used to be a great community with valuable insight but after almost a decade of being a member I am seriously contemplating moving on.

I'd be interested to hear your suggestions for how Odin and the other moderators can "control the board". How are they to stop threads from running on? Furthermore, how do they control the content?

Delete, lock, split, merge, ban, tighten registration requirements... just a few ideas, but it's definitely easier said than done, I will give you that!

Yeah, it's much better to create a bunch of pseudo-boardnames and then post a buncha frou-frou topics to get everyone arguing with each other.
Nothing lasts forever on the 'Net. VT will run its course, and then something else will come along after it to fill the void.

If my foggy memory serves, you used to post informative and insightful stuff. Of course, the "good" posters will always be outnumbered by the average and crummy ones. I always pick and choose which posters to read/pay attention to. It's the only way I can get through so much of the muck. If the "good" posters drop off, then the percentage of "good" stuff drops too. So, stay and contribute more. Raise the level of content here. Is there really any place that you can go on the Internet and not find uninformed and irritating posters?

I'd be interested to hear your suggestions for how Odin and the other moderators can "control the board". How are they to stop threads from running on? Furthermore, how do they control the content? a I'm not sure how long ago, but the moderator used to quite frequently lock posts pretty quickly once they veered off topic. Valuable content is lost amongst inflammatory posts regarding frivolous fighting that quickly pushes them to further pages on the board. For example, on the Women's Board there is currently a thread regarding a volleyball coach being charged with statutory rape. There is virtually no mention of volleyball and the thread is multiple pages long and continuously amongst the the top of the board. As the FAQ section states, this board is not a democracy and freedom of speech doesn't apply here whatsoever. Nip posters/threads that serve no purpose to the board in the bud. At this point there is no barrier into entry in this board and I've seen a lot of good posters leave the board all together for more intelligible forums, which I will not mention for fear that they will be overrun with belligerent posters. I'm not one to gripe and generally just stay out of things all together but more than anything I'm just disappointed with what this forum has turned into. In terms of what can possibly be done. -Establish limits on number of posts per day. -Threads started with an initial post should be deleted. -Merge the multiple threads regarding the same issue -Even perhaps banning posters that may not necessarily value the rules of the forum, but simply are unwelcome on the board. As the FAQ states the content and direction of the board are what the posters speak up and vouch for. A few inflammatory posts don't bother me, but there are clearly posters which are unwelcome and have made a habit of trolling this board.

Have you perhaps considered that you are just overreacting to the fact that the NCAA WVB season is now over, and all of a sudden it seems like there is nothing to talk about?

I wasn’t around in the good old days, but in the past two years I see “high quality volleyball posts” as about 10% of the traffic. To enforce "quality content only" would probably kill the website as there wouldn’t be enough traffic to keep the vast majority of viewers coming back on a regular basis.
One possibility is to divide the women’s volleyball forum into two sections. One section for strictly volleyball topics and posts, the other section for the existing “anything goes” format. Tightly enforce the "volleyball only" section until posters get the message.

It's too time consuming to do what you're asking. I just pick a thread that seems like it might be interesting, and when it denegrates I just don't go back. You can still get interesting info (in season) by selective reading. Sometimes links are provided you might not know about. Sometimes the first page or so of a topic have some good insights by someone close to the subject. I used to enjoy your posts about overseas stuff, but you have dropped off (unless I'm confusing you with someone with a similar name). I like Murina's posts, but skim over the comments of the dufuses in threads where she has posted. Ya know. Skim. As a long-time member of this forum I rarely check or even post at this point because the Odin has pretty much lost control of the board. Most posts run on and on with very little content to related to volleyball. The problem is that the moderators do not have the time to do what you are asking. You aren't just asking that we read all the posts, you're asking that we evaluate the content as well. While I would suggest you (and others) report problems to the moderators, I do not think a severe clamp-down/censorship of the posts on this site would go over well.
I am not saying that it should be a free-for-all. But I am saying the quality of this site depends more on the posters than it does the moderators.
I would also suggest that you pick and choose the people you want to communicate with, either publicly or privately, if you want to weed through the nonsense.

I must be logging onto a different forum.
Because, I'm looking at the front-page of the women's section of VT (during the off season) and among the topics that show up on the front page are these:
Jobs Thread New Husker Asst. Coach New Texas Tech Coach Speculation on Minnesota Coach Future for Stanford College Coach/University Athlete/NCAA Hawaii's 2011 Starters? Washington Recruits Scholarship Renewal Question MaxPreps NPOY Women's National Volleyball League
And while that "VB coach going to jail' thread has some questionable comments, it's still pretty interesting....to me anyway. It includes quite a bit of discussion about how college coaches are 'trained' to avoid such problems.
Sure there's a fair amount of drivel, maybe more than there used to be. And I probably contribute some of it, but this would be a pretty boring website if it was nothing but a very controlled volleyball insider clinic.
I have no idea how much revenue this site generates (I'd guess very little) but I assume it's more a passion than a career. And I think it's very well moderated. I sure wouldn't want the job.

"If you want to make the world a better place, take a look in the mirror and make a change."
That says it all, in my opinion. If you want to make the forum a better place with more informative, relevant, meaningful volleyball information, start with yourself.
