Most of them even admit to it as disclaimers in small writing at the end of the credits. In fact, half of the characters in Jersey Shore are not even Italian-Americans. Except for the original Road Rules, there has never been a true reality show on MTV.

All shows in the "reality" genre are edited in order to tell stories the producers think will be interesting. But they are unscripted -- that's where the profit comes from. It's a lot cheaper to just film a bunch of people than it is to hire writers and then actors to follow the scripts of the writers. There is no real point to scripting a "reality show." I'm sure the producers influence things from time to time if they think it will make a better show, but if they were actually scripted, what would be the profit in that? I mostly find them boring, and generally never watch any of them.

Let's make celebrities out of unwed teenagers - great idea. How many teenage girls, do you suppose, are thinking "I can make some money and be famous! I just need to get pregnant!" I won't watch any shows about multiples anymore, either. I just had a scary thought - "Teen Mom, Multiples." Oy vey.
