A lot of High schools who actually have a program, are hurt by the conflicting sport seasons. When you put football, soccer, cross country and volleyball all in the fall, you're going to miss out on some players

I'm not sure where boys' volleyball is a fall sport, but in california its a spring sport. the only sports to compete with are track & field, swimming, golf and baseball. Maybe thats the reason it isn't as big in other parts of the country.

not too sure how things are run in the north area of the midwest but in illinois high school boys volleyball is in the spring therefore only conflicting wiht baseball, track, and the now growing lacrosse. baseball and lacrosse steal a good number of players but those cut usually come tryout for the vball team their freshman year to be part of something athletic in high school. how are things run out west? fall or spring?

Yeah, I also thought boys' volleyball was in the spring. How many high school teams really have teams? I know there are only a few in NorCal, believe it or not, because there was none in my county here. The problem was none of the boys wanted to play (except me). A friend of mine made an interesting comment saying that men's volleyball was a very physical game, a lot of strenght goes in the game and ends plays very quickly. Could that have anything to do with the game's promotion? Good or bad?

Here in NY it is all mixed up. Most of the state plays in the fall and there are a couple that play in the spring. However the best teams and players play VB in the fall here because with the club season it lets them play all year round.

yea that woulda been sweet to have vball in the fall in illinois, because then we could have started club season around december and gone through the summer and finished off wiht nationals then going right into summer came and start next years season. instead we had club season starting in october and endng with about a month and a half or so before high school season, the break sucked and there probably would have been a lot more competition if illinois played high school season in the fall

Earlier today in Chicago, onr of our sportsradio personalities said that it would be easier to get a scholarship playing the oboe than playing volleyball. I guess any publicity is good publicity as they actually joked around about this for a couple of minutes in regards to one of their kids playing volleyball or something.

Do people get schollies for oboe playing? I guess there are musical academic awards. Any discussion is good for the game as long as it's not derogatory. Middlehitter has some stats on boy's high school programs. The numbers have been going up strong. That helps when more players are in the pool and more parents, coaches, high school ADs etc. are exerting influence to the colleges on behalf of encouraging more programs. But it's long term. I have a friend who was able to get a high school to take on boy's volleyball. It took 2 years and lots of patience. They first had to have another girl's sport to balance it out. Then he had lots of problems with getting court time in the gym. But he persevered and his program is now one of the better ones in the region. He's a good coach. middlehitter.com/middlehitter/high_school_growth.htm

Wisconsin has men's vball in the fall. Supposedly, the WIAA (high school governing body) has discussed moving it to the spring to match up with the majority of the other states that have significant numbers of high school teams. Obviously, it would be nice if high school programs matched their competitive season with the same season as college programs. Anyway, all I know about Wisconsin is they didn't want volleyball players to have to choose between volleyball and baseball/track & field/whatever other spring sports there are. Spring sports seem to have smaller numbers on their rosters in direct opposition to football (biggest roster of any high school sport) and soccer. Either way there's gonna be decisions to be made by kids to play one sport over another...you might as well increase the odds by matching volleyball in the spring with the sports that have smaller roster sizes.
An idea I've had in my own head that would make the end of the volleyball season more exciting would be a border state match up of the state champion teams. With Illinois and Wisconsin this would be tough right now because WI has their fall season. Otherwise it would be easy to pull off since IL champ is always somewhere around Chicago, and WI champ has usually been around Milwaukee/Racine. That should equate to a 2 hour drive at the most to have an intriguing matchup. Illinois vs Missouri could be a good match up but longer distance between Chicago and St. Louis.

I think it would be nice just to have a California State Championship in general. We have champions based on sections, but not by the state as a whole. Bellarmine is supposedly really good in NorCal, but the Loyala's and Mira Costa's would probably dominate. I think it would be great to spread the sport like this.

the state championship eqaul playing field is at Hoffman Estates High School and has been for a while, they are thinking about moving it to a university but that has still been a debating question. From HEHS to Milwaukee is about and hour and a half maybe two if you hit traffic and rush hour, but that would be pretty interesting to see the two play. I am not too sure about the opinion of having volleyball in the fall in WI but i know if they did that in IL it would be amazing for club season for guys becusae right now there are breaks inbetween club and high school then nationals and it sucks that u have no volleyball for maybe 2 months at a time during this break, whereas the guys in WI get to play volleyball year round and that would be awesome.

Here in NY it is all mixed up. Most of the state plays in the fall and there are a couple that play in the spring. However the best teams and players play VB in the fall here because with the club season it lets them play all year round. Not MOST, some. Infact the parts that play are the Buffalo/Rochester area in Upstate New York, by the Great Lakes. The Suffolk County, near the Metropolitan/New York City area of New York State conducts their play during the fall for boys. I believe some parts of the Adirondacks also. This has kept theses program from competing for the state title for many years. I feel it the best way to go in terms of developing better players IN THIS AREA. Allowing these boys to play volleyball year round.Eden, Powerstaion and Pacebootleggers (Buffalo/Rochester), and LIVBC (Suffolk and Nassau Counties-NYC/Metro) has found a way to develope these young men based on their enthusiasm for the game. State titles being what they are we know that a US Open Junior Nationals titles is much more fulfilling for some kids (boys) and that is what these great boys programs are truly pushing for. Most states have boys volleyball during the Spring. Virginia, Wisconsin, and Hawai'i, I believe these states play boys volleyball during the fall, along with the prior two or three regions. Not too sure of anywhere else. Pennsylvania, Delaware (if they still sponsor boys volleyball on a varsity basis) Florida, Illinois, California, New York City & surrounding Metro area, New Jersey, Connecticut, has it during the spring as well. Look what ever we do we need to do it RIGHT. I'm not sure what should be done or how. I have gone around the city area giving free coaching clinics to high school coaches and AD's. I have done "teach volleyball classes" in the same high schools that are looking to improve their volleyball gym classes so to find better players for their varsity programs. We at City Tech invite anyone and everyone to our games, from councel members to youth groups. It is all a matter of timing right now for our sport. When we made the forst big push it was right after our play in the 92 Olympics. "The Barcelona Bob" Olympics when even "Big Red" Steve Timmons cut off his trademark red crew cut to support his teammate that year. So did the other members of the team, Stork, Partie, Greenbaum, Stavertlyk ( I know spelled this wrong), Ivy, Nygaard, Fortune, they all did it. As a result there was in influx of support for our team and patriotism. Maybe that's what we need again. Another Olympic contriversy to spark our volleyball interests. Atleast in the men's games.
