whatever anyone can do to increase the amount of HS teams is super.
Bob Cvrtlik....definitely a spelling challenge. He is now on the IOC so is a great advocate of volleyball.

I also heard from the USAV folks yesterday that the NCAA has made some changes to D3 regs for schools, and that many will be needing to add sports. Great opportunity for men's vball. I do not have the details.

well from what i herd, is that Baptist Bible (PA) (d3) he re-started their program (i actually see them on some teams schedules). dominican in IL will be varsity next year (d3) Fontbonne U, in MO (d3) will be varsity. Neumann University is going NCAA 2 . Green Mountain (d3) in Vermont is adding a team this year. Southern Vermont (d3) added one last year. there has been some rumblings of Regis in MA, Emerson in MA and Wheelock in MA, Husson in Maine and UMAINE presque Isle (all D3) of adding teams. (still early to tell)
SUNYIT of NY (d3) just hired a full time coach for both teams and will be varsity next year.
There might be more in PA. How come the majority of the expansion is taking place on the East Coast and some in the Midwest?
Clarke used to be d3 but is now going NAIA.

How come the majority of the expansion is taking place on the East Coast and some in the Midwest? Possibly because they didn't have a lot of men's volleyball to begin with. Well the midwest (esp. Illinois & Wisconsin) had actually had a lot of boys' volleyball recently. I'd like to see more in the northwest though..

girls start playing volleyball younger than a lot of guys because it's either that or cheerleading. it's hard to play organized sports for girls at that age, but guys have way more choices; anything from football to basketball to lacrosse to baseball or whatever else they want to do. i think the key thing is to build interest in kids so that theyll want to continue once they get to high school and beyond. i think the best thing is to make it part of rec centers' summer leagues and stuff like that so that it gets in boys' heads when theyre young that volleyball is a cool sport that they might want to keep up with.
also, you need to get some standout players that are younger guys so that they are roll models for boys the way lebron james and michael vick are. it's probably easiest to do that with beach players, but if you get the right sixes players you could do it.
i agree with skynard... pe classes are def a way to go. every kid knows the rules to basketball or football, so it's no trouble for gym teachers to throw them the ball and have them go at it, but volleyball is less well known, so somebody needs to actually TEACH the kids the right moves, rules, etc. if theyre expected to really get interested. because with the gym classes they have now, most kids come out thinking volleyball is a stupid backyard game you play at family picnics with no rules and whatnot.
