If you want a great hamburger in LA go to an Umami Burger. They aren't cheap and value-wise they don't compare to In-N-Out, but the burgers are VERY good. Plus, they're sweet potato fries are PHENOMENAL! I've heard Umami is good. Want to try it some time ... I also had the bacon burger at Grub recently, also in L.A. That was good. The chef is Betty from season 2 of Top Chef. I've also enjoyed the burgers at 5 Guys. And I've also really liked Fuddruckers.

"Teddy's Bigger Burgers" are really good. These are in Hawaii, Washington and Japan. The fries are good too.

Red Robin started as a tavern in Seattle. Back in the day, it was "unchainified." These days it is very different, as it is owned by a corporation in Colorado. However, they do serve a burger with a fried egg and bacon on it, a combination which has always been my favorite burger. I'm not saying their version of the fried egg burger is the best, but it certainly is the one most easily available to me, because there is a RR only a few miles from my house, and also one only a few miles from my office. Kind of revisiting this after someone added to the thread. I remember visiting New Zealand (Aukland specifically) for less than two days. I wandered through the town and had dinner at McDonald's. The local special burger that was only found in NZ was the Kiwi Burger. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KiwiburgerIt was like a Big Mac, but with one patty, a fried egg, and a slice of red beet. It was pretty good, but apparently it was discontinued but later brought back periodically like we see wit the McRib.

When you were describing it "one patty, a fried egg, . . . sounded pretty good until that point. Then, "a slice of . . . red beet"?? Not sure how that would taste. Maybe with some kind of mayo sauce that would be good.
