I finally got to try one recently when I was passing through Fremont, California. I heard that some think it challenges In-N-Out Burger, but In-N-Out has smaller, simpler burgers and is less expensive.
If anything, I think Five Guys is more like the (primarily) Southern California chain Fatburger. They both cook their burgers well done and don't give any options to cook a burger any other way. They also have large portions and charge around $3-4 and up depending on size. I thought the peanuts were an interesting touch.
I'm not always a big eater, so I just ordered a "Little Hamburger" with a regular order of fries. I guess some toppings are standard unless you specify what you want. I liked the grilled mushrooms, which would be extra at other places.

I have never been to a Fatburger, but I agree with your characterization of Five Guys and In and Out. We have long convos about the merits of each with Smashburger thrown in there too. I love In and Out for it's sheer simplicity. White Castle holds a place in my heart for it's cuteness, Five Guys and Smashburger are burgers I need to sit down and eat. Regular fries at Five Guys can feed three people easy. I do enjoy a good burger once in a while and when I get the chance I'll have to try a Fatburger. Anybody else have good burger joints near them, mom and pop or chain?

I do like In-N-Out for a simple meal. I can eat for under $4 if I don't order a drink. I was also shocked that the Five Guys I went to charges $1.99 for a small beverage.
There's only one Fatburger in Northern California. There used to be another location which has since closed. I've heard of a proposal to build one in Oakland, but that got shot down by the city.
There are some decent burger places in my area. One is Fatapple's - with the original location in Berkeley and another in my hometown of El Cerrito. They bake pies onsite, as well as make their own pastries and buns. One place I don't understand is Barney's. It's a medium-sized chain that has some ardent followers, but I was unimpressed. The place I really like is Fog City Diner in San Francisco. It's $13 for a half pound burger with fries. There's also this greasy spoon in San Francisco called Red's Java House. It's a dive that started as a longshoreman's hangout but has developed new clientele over the years as the neighborhood changed. They serve a greasy burger on a sourdough roll. They have a sign that says "No lettuce, no tomatoes. Don't ask."

If you want a great hamburger in LA go to an Umami Burger. They aren't cheap and value-wise they don't compare to In-N-Out, but the burgers are VERY good. Plus, they're sweet potato fries are PHENOMENAL!

There's one phenomena I don't understand, that stupid Red Robin. I used to work at a place where group lunches took place there and after the first time it got old. The burgers just aren't that good.

I've been getting more depressed since fast food places have been required to list calorie ranges. I looked at how the standard burger at Five Guys weighs in as far as calorie count and got scared. I also got one order of fries, which has more calories than the "Little Hamburger". I could only eat half of an order of fries, and that was probably too much.
Yeah - I don't get Red Robin. I guess one of these days I might try Ruby Tuesday, although I only know of one location.
The fast food joints I enjoy are Sonic and In-N-Out. Sonic seems to avoid the heart of the Bay Area though. Their closest locations to me are on the edges of the area.

I love Sonic, I live where we see the commercials but I only get to stop there when I'm out and about, love the slushies there. I'm not a foodie or anything but, I did try to make a stuffed cheeseburger after having one in Minneapolis some time ago when JR Nationals were there. So yummy. These burger places are monthly treat for me. I don't eat out often but when I do, I like it to taste good, calories be damned.

It's all about the fries.
Good burgers but great fries. Plus they give you a ton. A full cup, plus they dump another cup on top.
On the east coast we don't have the in-n-out experience.

If you really really like fries, try Hot Doug's, a place in Chicago. The specialize in hot dogs, but they also serve duck fat fries on Fridays and Saturdays. www.hotdougs.com/menu.htm

I'm still looking to try some sort of exotic meat sausage. The only place I've seen stuff like that is at the Cabela's near Reno. I think they had venison sausage and maybe wild boar.

Yep. the city rescinded the ordinance.

Red Robin started as a tavern in Seattle. Back in the day, it was "unchainified." These days it is very different, as it is owned by a corporation in Colorado.
However, they do serve a burger with a fried egg and bacon on it, a combination which has always been my favorite burger. I'm not saying their version of the fried egg burger is the best, but it certainly is the one most easily available to me, because there is a RR only a few miles from my house, and also one only a few miles from my office.

Never had one, but you have to try a Kua'Aina Hamburger in Hawaii. They are also in Japan and London. Really awesome burgers.

Five Guys burgers are the best. I'm just glad there isn't one nearby my university or I'd be FAT. No self-control.
