PS-O'Malley told me SPRI coaches were a bunch of hacks
Which set of coaches... the ones who were there when he was playing for them (15's-17's) or the ones who run the program after he left??? His club coach during his 18's (CVC I believe) was temporarily chased out of coaching for alleged behaviors...
And NO, I will not expand on that statement...
On the topic of O'Malley, I found this old link....

Good point. But because of the history of women's volleyball coverage and the current men's attitude towards volleyball. Would guys really want to see men's volleyball now?
Probably not. But the difference is the casual channel flipper. Almost nobody is gonna plan their night around watchin BYU vs. Pepperdine in the National Semi or something unless their volleyballers. However, if volleyballs on TV and ESPN goes to commericial, people flip to the deuce, a lot of people would turn off women's volleyball because its so slow. However, you might get more people to stop and watch mens, due to the differences in the game. Thats the major difference
Al Scates told Alfie Reft he would never ever play college. He didn't give up and ended up two-time AA and Defensive player of the year, now in the national team. He is a libero so maybe that example is not as good but there are many hitters who have beaten the tall guys with their athleticism and skill.
I'm really dying to know what context Scates told Reft he wouldn't play college. I am having a tough time believing that it is in the context that you paint it. "Never ever"? Scates might have said that he would never ever play for him in college. He might have said that he would never ever play front court in college. Can you source a quote? More importantly, can you put the quote in proper context? To my point...
Big, fast, short. Which of these can you learn? You can train to be fast. If a sub 6'4" player has the skills and ability of Giba, they can make it. Newsflash: people will try to tell you that you can't do all sorts of stuff. Get a helmet.

Without seeing a quote source on Scates, I still wouldn't doubt he said that. I know Alfred...he was all set to give up on playing vb and be a full-time student at UCLA. I hate to pull up race relations, but it was no surprise that Tino and the boys game Reft a chance at pigment-friendly UH. Besides, UH has been smart enough to take flyers on all sorts of unknowns these past few years. Some work out quite well (Stanhiser), some have incredible athleticism but never see the court (Jeff Gleason, '02 ring, never played). But I digress...
As far as O'Malley goes, he went CVC his last yr b/c of the SPRI shenanigans. In fact, I've witnessed him wear his CVC jersey around w/ pride
That Reft would never play college volleyball. Period. It wasn't a matter of playing for UCLA or front row or anything else.
That is too bad if he did say it. One of the least intelligent things to possibly say while sober.
Sorry, but I can not seriously envision Scates saying that, or anything close to that. He simply would never discourage anyone from playing this sport. I can only imagine it was mis-heard, or in another context. I don't doubt that's what you may have thought occured, but it's just too rediculously out of character. What would he have to gain, especially telling someone who was so obviously talented as Reft? It just doesn't make any sense. At the time Reft was coming up the Bruins were loaded with All American liberos. Whatever he said may have been meant to say he's got too many liberos as it is.

I love how these threads almost never stay on the point
;D
I agree but I guess sometimes it is easier for someone to drop in a comment versus starting a whole new thread...
On the Volleyball Mag forum, the kids from WI started posting all comments on the WI high school season in a single thread and now the WI club season on one thread to prevent dozens of threads on very similar subjects. The HS thread has 2,169 replies while the club one is up to 239 in their beginning of the season.
A creative approach...
