I predict that in the next 5 or 6 years, there will be only 5 major college sports conferences. They will be -
A merger of the ACC & some Big East schools. An expanded SEC with 2 or 3 new schools. The Big 10 (or 11 or 12) expanding to 16 schools The Big 12 (or 11 or 10) expanding to 16 schools The PAC-10 (or 11) expanding to 14 or 16 schools
I look for the following changes:
The SEC will add Louisville & Memphis, & maybe Tulane. The Big 10 will invite Notre Dame, Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse, or Missouri The Big 12 will invite TCU (sorry Big East) & New Mexico, & possibly Houston & New Mexico State The PAC-10 will invite Boise State, Nevada, UNLV, & maybe Hawaii
Among the big losers will be DePaul, Marquette, & Gonzaga. Football will be the motivating force behind change.

Where would BYU go, or is that one of the schools you predict to lose out in joining your predicted major 5 conferences? I would think they have more to offer in terms of competitive major sports than UNLV and Nevada for instance.

I don't know what to do with BYU. Obviously, they have a good athletic program, especially in football, men's basketball, & men's volleyball. But, they also have that strict Mormon ethic & are not part of a major media area.
BYU might be in never-never land, like some of the schools I mentioned in the original post who don't accept the invitation to join new conferences.
Or, mybe I'm just not smart enough to find the right solution for BYU.
