Kiraly To Open Volleyball Academy in 2007
OMAHA, Neb. (Dec. 14, 2006) - Volleyball legend Karch Kiraly, considered by many to be the finest player in the game, will launch the Karch Kiraly Volleyball Academy in 2007 and will include an unprecedented coaching staff that has won 13 Olympic medals in both indoor and beach volleyball and almost 300 beach volleyball titles, it was announced today at a press conference at the Qwest Center in Omaha.
Sanctioned and recommended by USA Volleyball, the Karch Kiraly Volleyball Academy coaching staff looks like a “who’s who in volleyball” and includes such legends and standouts in the sport as Mike Dodd (75 beach titles and Olympic Beach Volleyball Silver Medal in 1996), Liz Masakayan (47 beach titles, 1988 Olympian and coach of 2004 women’s beach volleyball bronze medalists), Kim Oden (three-time Olympian and Olympic Bronze Medalist in 1992), Angela Rock (27 beach titles and 1988 Olympian) ), Eric Sato (1988 Gold Medal and 1992 Bronze Medal), Troy Tanner (1988 Gold Medal and current U.S. National Team assistant coach) and Steve Timmons (Olympic Gold Medals in 1984, 1988 and Bronze Medal in 1992.
In his prestigious career, Kiraly collected three Olympic Gold Medals, including the U.S. National team championships at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics and the Beach Volleyball Gold Medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Kiraly went on to great success on the beach, winning more tournaments (148) and more prize money than any player in the history of the AVP Tour.
“I have been very blessed to have such a long and successful career in this great sport – thanks to the amazing teammates and coaches I’ve shared the court with – and for many years I have searched for a platform that allows us to review, train and prepare the next generation of volleyball stars,” Kiraly said. “With the help of some of the greatest players in our sport and the support of USA Volleyball, we have developed a program that allows those of us who have been to the top of the game to share our experiences, skills and knowledge with those who want to be the next great volleyball players.”
In the summer of 2007, Karch Kiraly Volleyball Academy camps will be held at the American Sports Centers, the current training home of the U. S. Men’s National Team, in Anaheim, Calif. and a second camp will be held at a site to be determined in the eastern half of the country. Each five-day camp will be limited to 64 high school girls.
The program for the Academy has been designed by volleyball coaching legend Bill Neville. A former coach of both the U. S. Men’s and Women’s National teams, Neville is currently the National Commissioner of Coaching Education and a consultant to USA Volleyball. He designed and created USA Volleyball’s Coaching Accreditation Program (CAP), a comprehensive program that offers coaches opportunities to continue their education and improve their ability to positively influence young people through volleyball.
The intensive five-day elite player camps will feature an unprecedented student to coach ratio of only 8:1. As part of the program, participants also will receive video analysis, physical and mental preparation tips, detailed training reports, including daily progress reports from the coaching staff, and some valuable hands-on coaching from some of the world’s greatest volleyball players. Each camp will conclude with an eight-team tournament where the participants get to apply what they have learned during the week.
“This approach to volleyball – especially at the high school level – has never really been done,” said Liz Masakayan, who also appeared at the press conference. “This group of coaches, combined with an amazing complete package of tips, techniques and analysis will give these young women a true advantage in their volleyball careers and hopefully will make a distinct difference in their young lives.”
Invitations to participate in the Karch Kiraly Volleyball Academy will awarded to 128 high school girls and based on applications submitted to the Academy and reviewed by the coaching staff. Applications are available via the Academy’s website at www.karchacademy.com. Tuition for the five-day program is $2,450 per player and includes all on-court activities, coaches’ analysis, film analysis, room and board, and an equipment and apparel package.
“USA Volleyball is proud to lend its support and affiliation to the Karch Kiraly Volleyball Academy,” USA Volleyball Chief Executive Officer Doug Beal said. “It will be an officially sanctioned USA Volleyball program. Karch is widely recognized as one of (if not the) greatest player in our sport’s history. He has put together a quality staff with significant Olympic indoor and beach experience that is committed to passing on these experiences in a positive learning environment. The youth volleyball players who attend will have the opportunity to interact with a true icon of our sport who brings a unique ability to focus, a special level of drive and a demand for excellence to every activity he undertakes. Karch is all about excellence and making those around him better, and everything he touches in this sport has truly been golden. USA Volleyball is privileged and honored to be a part of this ground-breaking academy.”
