NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Senior James Lischer and freshman Mike Gaudino each knocked down a match-high 12 kills to lead Cal State Northridge to a 30-25, 30-24, 30-26 exhibition win over Thompson Rivers University on Wednesday in The Matadome.
Lischer hit .529 (12-3-17) while Gaudino struggled to a .071 (12-10-28) clip but contributed 13.5 points in his first collegiate match. Senior Dan Rhodes added 11 kills (.240) while Isaac Knebuhl and Kevin McKniff each chipped in six kills. McKniff hit a match-high .556 (6-1-9) and also served the Matadors' only two aces. Gaudino did match Ali'i Keohohou for match-high honors with seven digs and Gaudino had two blocks (one solo).
For the Wolfpack, Matt Harris knocked down a team-high 10 kills (.217) and had six blocks while Robin Schoebel added nine kills (.087). Tim Flannigan and Colin Jaggard combined for 34 assists in the loss.
Northridge hit .536 in taking the first game 30-25, but slipped to a .156 clip in game two. Fortunately for the Matadors, Thompson Rivers hit .000 in the second frame giving Northridge a 30-24 win. Both teams hit decently in game three but the Matadors used a mini 5-1 run with the score tied 15-15 to open up a 20-16 cushion.
The Wolfpack closed within 23-21 after a kill from Colin Jaggard but would get no closer as the Matadors closed out the game 30-26.
Northridge officially opens the 2007 season this Friday as the Matadors travel to Santa Barbara to take part in the UCSB/Elephant Bat Invitational. Northridge, seeded fourth, will take on fifth-seeded Long Beach State Friday at 1 p.m. then will take on either top-seeded UC Irvine or eighth-seeded Stanford at 7 p.m.
