11th Ranked Ohio State Men’s Volleyball Opens the Season with 3-0 Victory over MSOE
Ohio State’s Sam Stevens scores a match-high 12 points while hitting a career-high .750.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 11th-ranked Ohio State (1-0) men’s volleyball team opened the 2007 season with a 3-0 (30-12, 30-20, 30-18) victory over MSOE (0-1) (Milwaukee School of Engineering) Friday night in St. John Arena. Ohio State’s Sam Stevens (5th/Sr., Miami, Fla.) scored a team-high 12 points for the Buckeyes with Dan Meske (Sr., Willow Springs, Ill.) adding 10. Stevens recorded a match-high nine kills, adding three ace serves while hitting a career-high .750 (9-0-12). Meske posted seven kills and added three ace serves in the match. For MOSE, Kevin House and Michael Mocchi each had six points in the match. Each recorded five kills and an ace serve against OSU.
Ohio State quickly built up a 10-1 lead in game one including back-to-back ace serves from Layne Dreven (5th/Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and back-to-back kills from Stevens. The Raiders cut the lead to eight at 15-7 before an 11-1 Buckeye scoring run opened a 26-8 OSU lead. A John Albertson (Jr.,/So., Ballwin, Mo.) kill set game point at 29-11. After an OSU error, a service error by MSOE ended the game at 30-12. Ohio State hit .579 for the game, making only one error, while the Raiders hit .000
Ohio State held a 5-3 lead in game two before two Buckeye errors and an ace serve by Mocchi gave MSOE a 6-5 lead. An Albertson kill tied the game at six. An OSU error gave the Raiders a 7-6 lead. A Buckeye block by Albertson and Daniel Mathews (Jr., Shorewood, Wis.) tied the game at seven, beginning a 7-0 scoring run for Ohio State to take a 13-7 lead. At 25-19, kills by Albertson and Stevens, a Dan Meske (Sr., Willow Springs, Ill.) ace serve and a Raider error set game point at 29-19. A Mocchi kill stopped the game point at 29-20. A service error by MSOE ended the game giving OSU a 30-20 win. The Buckeyes hit .435 for the game to -.042 for MSOE.
Game three saw the Buckeyes hold an 8-7 lead before a kill and an ace serve by Robbie Klein (Jr./So., Cincinnati, Ohio), a Dreven kill and a Raider error gave Ohio State a 12-7 lead. At 12-8, the Buckeyes would outscore MSOE, 13-4 to open a 25-12 lead. Raider kills by House and Ronald Covert cut the lead to 11 at 25-14. The squads exchanged points to reach match point at 29-17. An OSU service error on match point made it 29-18. Matthew Hankey (Sr./Jr., Naperville, Ill.) closed out the game with a kill to end the game at 30-18 and give Ohio State a 3-0 victory. The Buckeyes hit .857 for the game collecting 18 kills on 21 attempts with no errors. MSOE hit .125 for the game.
Ohio State hit .619 for the match to .017 for MSOE. The Buckeye hitting percentage ranks as the second best in Buckeye history. The record is .671 in 1997 at Mercyhurst. OSU had a 44-17 margin in kills and had a 15-2 edge in ace serves. OSU’s Dreven scored a match-high four aces for his career-high. The 15 aces tied for the second most in an OSU match with Clarke in 2005 and at Pacific in 2001. The Ohio State record is 17 against Thomas More in 1995. The Buckeyes gave up 22 service errors to 13 for the Raiders. Defensively, Ohio State had a 19-12 advantage in digs with OSU’s Meske and Robbie Klein sharing match-high honors with five each. At the net, Ohio State had 4.5 team blocks while holding MSOE to no blocks. OSU’s Mathews had a match-high four blocks with a solo and three assists. Mathews had 32 assists in the match while MSOE’s Christopher Brandt recorded 14.
Ohio State continues a seven match home stand next Wednesday when the Buckeyes host Clarke College at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena.
