11th Ranked Ohio State Defeats Clarke, 3-0
Ohio State’s John Albertson scores a match-high 15 points including a career-high five ace serves
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 11th-ranked Ohio State (2-0) men’s volleyball team won a 3-0 (30-16, 30-21, 30-15) decision over Clarke (0-2) Wednesday night in St. John Arena. Buckeye John Albertson (Jr./So., Ballwin, Mo.) scored a match-high 15 points for Ohio State with Layne Dreven (5th/Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) adding 12 and Dan Meske (Sr., Willow Springs, Ill.) 11. Albertson posted eight kills, a career-high five ace serves, a solo block and two assists in the match against the Crusaders. Dreven had eight kills (in eight attempts with no errors), two ace serves and four assist blocks while Meske recorded a match-high nine kills (.818), an ace serve and two assist blocks. Crusader Bryce Kingsley posted a team-high seven points for Clarke with six kills and an ace serve.
Ohio State took an early 10-4 lead in game one only to see it cut to four from kills by Ed Frederick and Andy Accacian. At 11-7, Ohio State used a nine-two run to take a 20-9 lead. The Buckeyes closed out the run with five straight points starting with a Meske kill, two Dreven ace serves and finishing with a kill and solo block by Sam Stevens (5th/Sr., Miami, Fla.). At 24-14, four straight Crusader errors put the score at 28-14. A Dreven-Daniel Mathews (Jr., Shorewood, Wis.) block set game point at 29-14. A Buckeye error and a Taylor Albright kill stopped two game point attempts before a Dreven kill ended the game at 30-16. Ohio State hit .500 for the game to .000 for Clarke.
Tied a five-all in game two, an Albertson kill and a Mathews-Dreven block gave the Buckeyes a 7-5 lead. After a Frederick kill and two Clarke errors, A Dreven kill took the lead to 10-6. At 20-15, a Dreven kill, a Buckeye error and a Robbie Klein (Jr./So., Cincinnati, Ohio) ace serve opened an eight point lead for Ohio State at 23-15. The Buckeyes held the lead and with a Dreven kill, won the game, 30-21. Ohio State hit .630 for the game to .143 for Clarke.
Ohio State opened game three with a 3-0 lead off an Albertson kill, a Clarke error and a triple block by Albertson, Mathews and Stevens. At 4-2, OSU, the Buckeyes scored six straight points to take a 10-2 lead. The run began with a Clarke error. An Albertson ace serve was followed with a block by Dreven and Klein. Albertson then scored three consecutive aces to complete the run. The squad exchanged points to reach 16-9, OSU. The Buckeyes then scored seven straight points to take a 23-9 lead. The run included three kills by Klein, one by Ted Schoenfeldt (Fr., Northbrook, Ill.), two ace serves by Mathews and a Clarke error. The Buckeyes reached match point at 29-14 with a Matthew Hankey (Sr./Jr., Naperville, Ill.) kill. An OSU error made it 29-15. A Clarke service error ended the game at 30-15 to give OSU a 3-0 win in the match. The Buckeyes hit .562 for the game to .091 for Clarke.
For the match, Ohio State hit .569 to .082 for Clarke. The Buckeyes had a 45-24 advantage in kills and a 13-1 margin in ace serves. Buckeye Albertson recorded a match/career-high five aces. OSU gave up 17 service errors to 10 for Clarke. Defensively, Ohio State had a 13-11 advantage in digs with OSU’s Meske recording a match-high four. At the net, the Buckeyes had a nine to one edge in team blocks. OSU’s Dreven had a match-high four assist blocks in the match. At setter, Daniels had 37 assists for Ohio State while Accacian had 20 for Clarke.
The Buckeyes continue a seven-match home stand next Monday (7 p.m.) and Tuesday (2 p.m.) when they will host Springfield in St. John Arena.
