12th Ranked Ohio State Sweeps Springfield, 3-0
Ohio State’s Robbie Klein posts a match-high 17 points in OSU’s fourth straight victory.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 12th-ranked Ohio State (4-0) men’s volleyball team, behind a match-high 17 points from Robbie Klein (Jr./So., Cincinnati, Ohio), won a 3-0 (30-18, 30-21, 30-24) decision over Springfield College (0-3) Tuesday afternoon in St. John Arena, to complete the two-match sweep of the Pride. Klein had a team-high 13 kills in the match, adding an ace serve, a solo block and four assist blocks while hitting a season-high .706. OSU’s John Albertson (Jr./So., Ballwin, Mo.) contributed 14.5 points in the contest with Dan Meske (Sr., Willow Springs, Ill.) adding 13.5. Albertson recorded eight kills, two ace serves and a match-high nine assist blocks for the Buckeyes with Meske contributing nine kills, three ace serves and three assist blocks. Springfield’s Eric Palumbo posted a team-high 15 points for the Pride with a match-high 15 kills.
Trailing 5-4 in game one, a Springfield kill by Palumbo tied the game at five. An Andy Sipe kill and an Andrew Nally ace serve gave Springfield a 7-5 lead. Buckeye kills from Layne Dreven (5th/Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Klein tied the game at seven. Springfield took an 8-7 lead with a Sipe kill. A Dreven kill tied the game at eight and with a Meske, Dreven and Sam Stevens (5th/Sr., Miami, Fla.) block and a Klein ace serve, the Buckeyes took a 10-8 lead. Springfield kills by Nally and Palumbo and an OSU error cut the lead to 11-10. The Buckeyes, with a 5-2 run opened a 16-12 lead. The run began with two kills from Albertson. A Klein kill and two OSU errors made it 14-12. A Daniel Mathews (Jr., Shorewood, Wis.)-Albertson block and an ace serve from Stevens made it 16-12. With OSU leading 21-17, a Buckeye error cut the lead to three at 21-18. Ohio State then scored nine straight points to win the game, 30-18. The run began with two Pride errors (23-18). A Klein kill, blocks by Albertson and Stevens and Albertson and Mathews and a Meske ace serve made it 27-18. A Springfield error and a second Meske ace serve set game point at 29-18. OSU closed out the game with an Albertson-Mathews block for a 30-18 win. Ohio State hit .375 for the game to .074 for the Pride.
