12th Ranked Ohio State Defeats St. Francis, 3-0
Ohio State’s Layne Dreven scores a team-high 14.5 points in OSU’s fifth straight victory
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 12th-ranked Ohio State (5-0) men’s volleyball team won its fifth straight match of the season with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-19, 30-21) victory over St. Francis (Pa.) Friday night in St. John Arena. Ohio State’s Layne Dreven (5th/Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored a team-high 14.5 points in the match with Robbie Klein (Jr.,/So., Cincinnati, Ohio) adding 13. Dreven had 10 kills and hit .769, adding three ace serves and three assist blocks. Klein had a team-high 12 kills (.476) and two assist blocks. Marc Honore of the Red Flash had a match-high 15 points for St. Francis with Jordan Varee adding 12. Honore had 12 kill (.733) and three ace serves while Varee had 12 kills.
St. Francis broke a two-all tie with a Varee kill and an OSU error to take a 4-2 lead. At 5-3, the Buckeyes scored seven straight points to take a 10-5 lead. The run began with a Red Flash error. Two kills from Dreven gave OSU a 6-5 lead. After a St. Francis error, two Klein kills and one by Dreven gave the Buckeyes a five point lead. At 20-15, a Buckeye error cut the lead to four at 20-16. A kill and ace serve by Dreven opened a six point lead at 22-16. Trailing 24-18, St. Francis used two Honore ace serves and his kill, plus an OSU error, to cut the lead to two at 24-22. Three Red Flash errors and a Buckeye block by Dreven and Daniel Mathews (Jr., Shorewood, Wis.) gave Ohio State a 28-22 lead. A St. Francis kill by Shane Conley made it 28-23 but OSU reach game point with a Dan Meske (Sr., Willow Springs, Ill.) kill at 29-23. A Varee kill stopped the first game point (29-24) but Meske, with a kill, ended the game at 30-24. Ohio State hit .571 for the game to .364 for St. Francis.
The Buckeyes took a quick 2-0 lead in game two with a kill from Klein and a Dreven ace serve. Errors by both teams moved the score to 3-2, OSU. Buckeye kills from Meske, Klein and Sam Stevens (5th/Sr., Miami, Fla.) made it 6-2, OSU. An Honore kill and a Buckeye error cut the lead to 6-4. Kills from Klein and John Albertson (Jr./So., Ballwin, Mo.) kill and an OSU error took the score to 8-5. Buckeye kills from Dreven and Klein made the score 10-6. Kills from Klein and Nick Rivett put the score at 11-7. A Red Flash error, kills by Meske and Albertson and a Dreven ace serve opened up a 15-7 Buckeye lead. Kills from Honore and Albertson and an OSU error made the lead seven at 16-9. Three St. Francis errors, an Albertson kill and an ace serve from Stevens gave the Buckeyes a 21-9 margin. A five-three Ohio State scoring run moved the score to 26-12. Three Buckeye errors cut the lead to 26-15. Kills from Dreven and Stevens and an OSU error made it 28-16. Buckeye errors cut the lead to 28-19. A Mathews kill set game point at 29-19 and a Red Flash error ended the game at 30-19. The Buckeyes hit .429 for the game to .050 for St. Francis.
Tied at four in game three, two Buckeye kills from Klein and an Albertson ace serve put Ohio State ahead, 7-4. At 9-6, a Buckeye error cut the lead to 9-7. OSU kills from Stevens and Albertson and a Red Flash error gave the Buckeyes a 12-7 lead. St. Francis, with two kills by Honore, one from Varee and errors by both teams cut the lead to two at 13-11. Leading 15-13, OSU score the next five points with kill from Mathews and Klein, a Dreven-Klein block and two Red Flash errors to take a 20-13 lead. A Buckeye error, a Dreven kill and a Dreven-Klein block made the lead eight at 22-14. Leading 26-18, OSU kills from Meske and Stevens took the lead to 10 at 28-18. Two OSU errors and a Red Flash triple block by Rivett, Pete Fryer and Conley cut the lead to 28-21. St. Francis had two errors to end the game at 30-21 for a 3-0 Ohio State victory. The Buckeyes hit .423 for the game to .126 for the Red Flash.
Ohio State hit .476 for the match to .213 for St. Francis. The Buckeyes had a 51-32 advantage in kills and a seven to three edge in ace serves. OSU’s Dreven and Red Flash Honore shared match-high honors with three each. St. Francis gave up 16 service errors to 13 for the Buckeyes. Defensively, Ohio State had a 21-16 margin in digs with Buckeye Stevens recording a match-high 10. Zach Nanni recorded a team-high seven for St. Francis. At the net, OSU had a three to 2.5 edge in team blocks. OSU’s Dreven recorded a match-high three assist blocks while Fryer had a solo and an assist for the Red Flash. Buckeye setter Mathews recorded a match-high 40 assists while Conley had 28 for the Red Flash.
Ohio State will complete a seven-match home stand next week when the Buckeyes host Rutgers-Newark Friday and Carthage Saturday in 7 p.m. matches in St. John Arena.
