Chicago, IL - The defending MIVA Champion IPFW Mastodons took a punch in the mouth from Loyola-Chicago, but hung around long enough to fight off a match point in the third set, and then roar back for a 3-2 win over the Ramblers on Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.
The #7 Mastodons dug deep and stopped the 13th ranked Ramblers by the scores of 25-30, 30-28, 31-29, 30-20, and 15-10.
Loyola came out on fire behind the free-swinging of junior opposite Ian Anderson and slugged their way to the first two sets.
Anderson seemed to go right at the 'Dons strength and scored at will on the IPFW block.
The Mastodons didn't help their cause much, coming out flat and giving up free points on double-digit service errors.
IPFW All-America outside hitter C.J. Macias and the rest of the 'Dons kept it close, hanging around long enough to get a chance in the third, but the Ramblers had a match point in hand. However, the Ramblers did not convert, and on a Macias kill, IPFW took the third set.
From there, IPFW began to pick up their blocking and their serving.
The Mastodons rolled the Ramblers in the fourth set and put Loyola away in the fifth and deciding set to remain perfect at 3-0.
"I felt the key to our turnaround in the fourth and fifth sets was our ability to serve the ball with aggression," said IPFW head coach Arnie Ball.
Another key was getting the ball into the hands of Macias. The reigning National Player of the Week registered 28 kills. He also was huge on the defensive end with seven block assists and five digs.
Junior middle hitter Josh Stewart put down 12 balls and was just dominant at the net. "Big Red" recorded three solo blocks and six block assists.
IPFW got some big swings off the left side in the match, as senior Josh Collins finished with 10 kills.
While they gave up 21 points on service errors, as Coach Ball alluded to, the Mastodons did turn up the heat on serve late.
Junior Brock Ullrich finished the match with five of the 'Dons 12 service aces.
Freshman Corey Stewart added three aces, two of those came in succession to stop a Loyola run late in the fourth.
Loyola (2-1, 0-1 MIVA) was led by Anderson with 28 kills of his own. He was one of four Ramblers to hit for double-figure kills.
IPFW (3-0, 1-0 MIVA) will have a short turnaround for their next match. They will board the bus tonight and head to Clarke College for a 2pm match with the Crusaders on Saturday afternoon.
