No. 9 Men’s Volleyball Takes On Powers At Hawaii Outrigger Invite
Nittany Lions square off with No. 2 BYU, No. 3 Hawaii this weekend

HONOLULU, Hawaii, January 25, 2007 – The ninth-ranked Nittany Lion men’s volleyball team (1-1) takes on a national powerhouse field at the 2007 Outrigger Invitational this weekend in Honolulu, Hawaii. Penn State squares off with No. 2 Brigham Young (6-0) on Friday, Jan. 26 at 4:00 p.m. HT (9:00 p.m. ET) before facing host and third-ranked Hawaii (2-2) on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 7:00 p.m. HT.
All of the matches at the Outrigger Invitational will be televised live on KFVE-TV with Jim Leahey, Chris McLachlin and Lisa Strand-Ma’a calling the action. ESPN 1420 will broadcast the Penn State-Hawaii match with Scott Robbs on the play-by-play. Gametracker will be available for all matches.
Previewing Penn State
The Nittany Lions enter the weekend with a 1-1 overall record after splitting matches with then-No. 15 Ball State and then-No. 7 IPFW in the opening weekend of the season, Jan. 12-13. Penn State hosted its annual alumni match last weekend at Rec Hall. Senior Alex Gutor (Kiev, Ukraine) leads the Nittany Lions with an average of 5.33 kills per game while sophomore Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) chips in 3.67 kpg, sophomore Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) adds 2.50 kpg and freshman Max Lipsitz (Williamsville, N.Y.) provides 2.00 kpg. Junior setter Luke Murray (East Petersburg, Pa.) directs the offense with 12.83 assists per game and senior libero Ryan Walthall (Irvine, Calif.) leads the defensive charge with 2.50 digs per game as Murray contributes 2.00 dpg. Murray also heads the blocking charts with an average of 1.00 blocks per game while both Holt and Gutor chip in 0.83 blocks per game. As a team, Penn State is hitting .324 with 15.83 kills per game, 1.83 service aces per game, 10.17 digs per game and 2.33 blocks per game.

This will be the 13th year of competition for the Nittany Lions at the Outrigger Invitational. Penn State joins only host Hawaii as the only team to compete every year since the tournament’s inception in 1995.
The Series: Penn State vs. Brigham Young
Penn State leads Brigham Young, 9-5, in a series that began in 1990. The last meeting was five-game Nittany Lion victory (20-30, 23-30, 30-21, 30-25, 15-10) on Feb. 5, 2005 at the Hall of Fame Classic in Springfield, Mass. This will be the first meeting between the two teams at the Outrigger Invitational.
The Series: Penn State vs. Hawaii
Penn State trails Hawaii, 12-2, in a series that began in 1995. The last meeting was a three-game Warrior victory (30-19, 30-21, 34-32) on Jan. 18, 2006 at the Outrigger Invitational. The last Nittany Lion win in the series was a five-game victory (30-27, 36-38, 30-28, 27-30, 15-13) at the 2004 Outrigger Invitational.
