Tuesday: January 30, 7:30 p.m.
What has grown to be one of the best rivalries in all of club volleyball, these two national powers clash. Marquette vs. Oshkosh has known to put out some unbelievably entertaining matches. Oshkosh brings back the bulk of their national championship team, and will more than likely enter as Pre-season #1. Marquette has a bit of a new look team, but has a lot of depth. They will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing fall season.
What kind of chance do you think Marquette has against Oshkosh?
I'm assuming that most people aren't giving them a chance in hell, but I think they have the chance of pulling the upset. Although Marquette has less talent at the big positions, they boast a great defense and solid passing. Look what that did for them last year against Arizona. I think that if they play composed as a team, they can surprise Oshkosh and win. Homecourt definitely helps too.

I predict that Marquette will not win a game, and that soon afterwards they will realize that they might not be one of the top teams in the midwest anymore, no matter how much they hype up their team on volleyball discussion sites.

I know that Oshkosh will be the pre-season #1, but I thought that Lakeland beat them already in the pre-season wisconsin conference tourney. In my opinion those rankings don't mean a whole lot.

Pre-season rankings, in a way, cost teams matches. Just because your team is ranked higher doesn't mean you can't lose to a team lower than you. Some teams feel that they should win and so they don't try as hard. That will be the case with Oshkosh at Marquette, but I can't see Oshkosh losing to Marquette any time this year.... -I guess im blind, way to go Marquette!

I'm still in the dark when it comes to Oshkosh, Marquette and the other club programs. I'm on the west coast, so help me out here...would these teams lose to one of our top Cal JC programs? (Long Beach City, Pierce, Moorpark, Santa Monica, etc.)

As a club player who happens to be from southern california and has watched a few JC games and played against Oshkosh, I think it would be a very good match. Oshkosh's height is unmatched in any JC and has good overall firepower. I would have to give the advantage to the very top club teams over the JCs. This is in comparison to the Moorpark JC team two or three years ago that won it all. The players that come out of JC's are better players in general and have a better chance at D-1, but club is not the same. Players find their niche and excell in that niche. I would like to see a few JC club matches.

Went to the match last night. Oshkosh frankly did not seem all that interested in being there. No energy and no one except their opposite had any emotion to them. Game two which Oshkosh won 38-36 I believe was an awesome game.

With a number of Oshkosh players returning for, what, year five or six of college? - and coming off their achievement of winning nationals last year, I'd have to believe motivation will be a factor all year long. It's different coming back hungry (as they did last year) versus coming in "fat and sassy," as the saying goes. I expect they'll turn it up a notch later in the spring for MIVA's and nationals ...but will it be too late? Can the new players off of a talented 'B' team mesh with the old guard? A lot of talent there, so they'll be a force all year.

The point of energy was very evident in the way the two teams played. Marquette seemed to take control during game 3 when block after block turned the match. They were much better than I anticipated as well, as the team looked much more ready to play than in the fall semester.

i think it's funny how oshkosh never updates their website after a loss, as opposed to a website that's updated day-of after a win. chances are they won't update their website until their next win, which will include a big article about who did what, etc.

Hilarious, I wonder if this match would have happened two weeks ago, whether Oshkosh would still have been ranked number 1 and Marquette, number 16? Cant wait to see all of these squads at Hoosier-Illini

I am responsible for the Oshkosh Volleyball Website. I'm an alumni of Oshkosh and I volunteer my time to update the site. In the 10 years I've been doing this I can count on my hands how many times the site has been updated on the day of a match and I very seldom get to do it the day after either. Considering this is only Oshkosh's second loss in a year, I do consider this to be a big story and it will be on the site shortly. Had I the time to go to the match, it may have gone up sooner, but that seldom happens. I challenge you to find me a NIRSA team's site that updates more often and has more news stories (which the head coach writes for almost every match) than ours. Until I see it, stop criticizing my work.
