LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC San Diego men’s volleyball team edged Princeton 28-30, 30-21, 30-25, 31-29 on Wednesday night in RIMAC Arena. The win was UCSD’s seventh straight over the Tigers, dating back to 1999. Princeton was down 28-25 in game one, but rallied to take the game. UCSD then cruised to wins in games two and three, before putting the match away in the fourth game on a block by Stephen Shaw and Frank Fritsch. Jason Spangler led the Tritons with 19 kills on .457 hitting. Will Ehrman (13 kills) and Adrian Guthals (12 kills) also reached double figures. UCSD improves to 3-4, while Princeton drops to 0-3.
The Tritons took a 16-13 lead on a Tim Dietrich ace, only to see the Tigers tie up the game at 20-20. UCSD then scored seven of the next 10 points to lead 27-23 after an Ehrman ace, and the game looked to be in favor of the Tritons. Princeton then strung a late run together with an ace, tying the game at 28-28. Then, consecutive Tiger blocks closed out the game in favor of the Tigers at 30-28.
UCSD scored eight of the first 11 points in game two and cruised to the 30-21 win. The Tritons led by as many as nine points in the frame.
UCSD hit .333 in each of the next two games. The Tritons jumped to a 12-6 lead, only to see the Tigers cut it down to 12-11 after four consecutive Triton errors. Princeton would never lead however, and the Tritons opened the lead back up to 20-15 on a Shaw kill. The Tigers would get no closer than three points, the last at 27-24, before Spangler closed out the game at 30-25.
The Tritons led for the most part of the early going in game four, leading 13-7 and 17-11. Princeton began to chip away and pulled within 24-23 after a UCSD service error and a Princeton ace. A Tiger error and a block by Guthals and Spangler game the Tritons some room at 26-23. Princeton hung close and would tie the game at 29-29 on a service ace. A Princeton attack error then gave the Tritons match point, as Shaw and Fritsch put the roof on the attack for the UCSD win at 31-29.
UCSD is back in action when it hosts No. 14 Pacific on Friday, February 2. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
