For Immediate Release: Jen Armson, Men’s Volleyball Contact Penn State Athletic Communications www.GoPSUsports.com No. 7 Penn State Men’s Volleyball Tops No. 11 Ohio State, 3-1 Gutor and Anderson set new career marks in the win UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., February 1, 2007 – The seventh-ranked Penn State men’s volleyball team topped No. 11 Ohio State in four games (30-32, 31-29, 30-27, 30-26) Thursday night in its first home match of the season. The Nittany Lions improve to 3-2 while the Buckeyes suffer their first loss of the year and fall to 7-1. “I thought it was a pretty good first home match,” said head coach Mark Pavlik. “We covered a range of situations – from being down big, being up big, coming from behind, holding on to the lead – you name it. Anytime you play the Buckeyes, they’re not going to go away. I’m pleased with the offense, I’m very pleased with the defensive effort and I’m happy with our transition offense. It was a positive match for us.” Senior Alex Gutor (Kiev, Ukraine) racked up a career-high 27 kills in the contest, just five shy of the Penn State rally scoring record. Sophomore Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) also set a career mark with 20 kills on .417 hitting as sophomore Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) pounded a season-high 13 kills on .579 hitting. As a team, Penn State attacked at a .397 clip in the match, including hitting .481 in the fourth game alone (17-4-27). Junior setter Luke Murray (East Petersburg, Pa.) dished out 56 assists and tied his career best with four kills on five attacks to hit .600. Senior Aaron Smith (Forest, Va.) led the squad with nine digs as Murray and senior libero Ryan Walthall (Irvine, Calif.) both notched eight digs, Anderson provided seven and Gutor notched six. By the stats i need to admit that PSU didnt play @ their best. PSU is at least 10 points better than OSU. Is A Smith injured? What happened with him in that game?

The OSU setter is STILL playing high-slow ball. After all these years of starting he still sets like High School. I could have come out of the stands, changed into a uniform, and got an assist block...in the time it takes to get the set to the OH.
Is there something wrong with his shoulder?

ballnut, i agree with you, I think that isnt only OSU setter. The coaching style like that kind of game. The Canadian kid of few years ago was an "slow ball setter" too. I guess that OSU setter doesnt have good setter skills but i think that is not his fault. Is most the desire and effort of the whole team. . Go Colts!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks vbcosta... I really dont thinks its the setter as much as the team offense. It probably has something to do with Coaching, because VB said that he STILL sets the HIGH Balls but if the coaches wanted him to change that, im sure he would or someone else would be setting! Its not only the setters fault, it is the whole team, The outsides passing, bad passes cause higher sets.... Just cuz he sets the ball high doesnt mean that YOU could get a block. PSU is a great blocking team, Holt is 6'8, Anderson is 6'9 or so, Lipsitz is about 6-8or9.... they have big boys. Oh... and just to disprove your point, i looked up the blocking stats from the game and Ohio State had 9 team blocks. Penn State had 9.5. Yes i know that PSU had .5 more blocks but its still pretty even. Its just ONE more assist block. So does that mean that Luke Murry sets a HIGH BALL OFFESE? No, anyone that watches vball knows that PSU runs ONE OF the fastest offenses in the country year in and year out.....

Luke Murray is a great A+ setter. He is natural setter someone that knows how to run an offense. Guntli from Loyola is very good too. Ohio st setter, his problem is that he is not a setter. He is a "ball thrower". There is a big difference Vballnut. I agree with you about the team effort. However, It doesnt help that kind of game. Penn St game is one fast and sharp.

Using the old formula of "what if"...
What if Luke Murray and the OSU setter changed teams? Would OSU become a FF team?

Post by vbcosta14 on Feb 6, 2007 20:27:13 GMT -5
No, Becuase Even with Luke Murray, There is a Loyola and IPFW. Both teams are posible FF. OSU as a team is weak this year. The setter is double weak in his position. Why he dont play OH or RS?
