Long Beach, Calif. - The No. 14 ranked Pacific men's volleyball team defeated No. 10 Long Beach St. 3-1 on Saturday, February 3rd in Long Beach, Calif. The game scores were 30-27, 30-32, 30-22, 30-25.
With the win, the Tigers improve to 6-5, 4-3 in the MPSF, while the 49ers fall to 5-5, 3-4 in the MPSF.
Pacific started out of the gates in game one hot, recording a stretch of 10 of 14 points won to take a 25-19 lead in the game, going on to win the game 30-27. Game two was a back and forth affair that saw the 49ers get the best of Pacific 32-30 as Long Beach St. hit .342 to secure the win.
In game three, the Tigers got back on track, holding the 49ers to a hitting percentage of .062 while hitting .281 as Pacific scored 13 of the last 17 points to post a 30-22 victory. Game four saw the Tigers continued dominance as .308 while holding Long Beach St. to .086, recording a 30-25 win.
The Tigers were led by junior Pekka Seppanen (Kuopio, Finland), who tallied 19 kills, 8 digs and 2 service aces. Junior Simon Chen-Byerley (Northfield, Ill.) hit .600, posting 11 kills on 15 swings with just two errors, while adding six blocks, including three solos.
Senior Matt Cornell (Granada Hills, Calif.) and freshman Maor Nutkevitch (Ra'anana, Israel) also posted double digit kills with 14 and 10 respectively for the Tigers.
Paul Lotman led the 49ers with a match-high 25 kills, while Dean Bittner had nine kills to go along with eight blocks.
The Tigers are next in action on as they travel to UCLA on Friday, February 9th.
