Stanford Tops UC San Diego In Five Led By a Strong Start, Cardinal Defeat Tritons 30-26, 30-27, 19-30, 26-30, 15-11

The Stanford Cardinal charged ahead of the UC San Diego Tritons 2-0. UCSD rallied to tie the match 2-2, but Stanford came out on top 30-26, 30-27, 19-30, 26-30, 15-11 on Saturday night in San Diego. With this thrilling road win, the Cardinal earn their first win of the season and improve to 1-11, 1-6 MPSF, while the Tritons drop to 3-6, 1-6 MPSF. Stanford was led by senior Matt Ceran with 21 kills on .340 hitting, while freshman Kawika Shoji's added a season high 61 assists.
Stanford fell behind UCSD in game one 23-24, and the teams would tie for the final time at 26-26. The Cardinal then scored the last four points of the game to take the game at 30-26.
In game two, the Cardinal hit .351, yet the Tritons were able to keep it close, with the score tied at 19-19. Stanford built a three point lead late in the game, but the Tritons fought back and cut the Cardinal's lead down to 27-25. Consecutive kills by Stanford put the game out of reach for UCSD and the Cardinal took the game 30-27.
UCSD came out firing in game three, taking a 7-1 lead. The Tritons hit a blistering .393 for the game and took the game, 19-30.
The Cardinal led 11-10 in game four, but their momentum was halted as UCSD went on a 7-1 run to take a 17-12 lead. Stanford managed to cut the lead down to 20-18, but UCSD put together another small run. A final kill by UCSD's Frank Fritsch forced game five at 26-30.
Stanford took over in game five. UCSD took a quick lead in the first point. After that, the teams tied at 6-6, before the Cardinal scored two straight as the teams switched courts at 8-6. UCSD cut the lead down to 9-8, but from there it was all Stanford. The Cardinal clinched the match at 15-11.
Up next the Cardinal will hit the road again as they take on UC Irvine and UCLA on Friday and Saturday evening, respectively. Stanford returns home to complete the first half of conference play against UC Irvine and UCLA again on February 16 and 17.
