What do the symbols mean to the left of the threads? Some look like they are on fire and they look like folders. The next column looks like white rectangles? What do these both mean? What do they mean when they are on fire and when they are not?

On fire just means more than X responses. "X" is about 15 or so, I think.

Yeah, the fire means its a "hot topic" and has lots of responses. The white piece of paper is just the standard symbol for a topic. When you create a topic you have the option of keeping it the paper icon or changing it to something else like a question mark, exclamation point, smiley, etc. to represent your feeling of a post prior to someone reading it...but hardly anyone uses it or pays attention to it.
