Waves Sweep UC Santa Cruz in Non-Conference Action Schleppenbach records 16 kills, five aces in victory.
MALIBU, Calif. - The third-ranked Pepperdine Waves extended its win streak to six after sweeping the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs (30-17, 30-18, 31-29) Saturday night at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif.
J.D. Schleppenbach recorded a match-high 16 kills and dealt out five service aces - all in game two - to lead Pepperdine (9-1) in its non-conference match. Jon Grobe added 14 kills on .500 hitting. Jonathan Winder dished out 43 assists and set the Waves to a .430 hitting percentage as a team. Tom Hulse recorded six of Pepperdine's 14.0 total team blocks.
Brice Dahlmeier led Santa Cruz with nine kills and an ace, while Jesse Garber chipped in with six kills and two blocks.
Pepperdine broke open a close game one with an 11-4 run after a Hulse blocking error tied the score at 9-9. During the run Carroll notched two of his three aces in the match. The run was capped by consecutive stuffs by Carroll and Greg Gaudino. After Garber stopped the Waves' run, Pepperdine closed out the set with a 10-3 run.
Game two saw Pepperdine jump out to a 10-5 lead that included three aces by the Waves. Pepperdine continued to pour it on building a 22-10 lead. The Waves hit .500 in the game.
The Waves played from behind most of game three and trailed by as many as four 21-17. Pepperdine did not trail long from that point scoring the next six points to take a two-point 23-21 lead. Santa Cruz got a spark from Dahlmeier and used a 7-3 run to take a 28-26 lead. Grobe recorded consecutive kills and following a Matt McKee kill, the Waves served for match-point. The Banana Slugs fought off the first try to finish the match but McKee kept match-point with Pepperdine and a hitting error by Santa Cruz sealed the match. Pepperdine will battle top-ranked BYU next week as part of Homecoming Weekend festivities. The Waves and Cougars will open the weekend series on Thursday at 7 p.m. PT. The second game is slated for a 1 p.m. first serve and will precede the women's basketball game against Loyola Marymount at 5 p.m.
