PEPPERDINE AND BYU COLLIDE THIS WEEK IN MALIBU
Pepperdine extended its win streak to six matches, including five straight in MPSF road action, with a four game decision at USC followed by a
home sweep over UC Santa Cruz. Paul Carroll posted a double-double against the Trojans with 26 kills (.352) and 11 digs, while adding six
blocks. Malibu will be the site Thursday and Saturday (Feb. 15-17) when the league’s top two face off as the Waves host top-ranked BYU….
BYU is coming off a bye week and will be at Cal Baptist Tuesday, before visiting Pepperdine for two battles against the MPSF leaders ….
UC Santa Barbara knocked off Hawaii twice for the first time since 1987, in five and four games in Honolulu. Thursday, for the third time this
year in conference play, UCSB was down 2-0 in games and came back to win in five. Evan Patak tallied 50 kills and 10 aces over the two wins.
The third place Gauchos return home for UC San Diego and Long Beach State this week….
UCLA extended its win streak to four matches with two home wins, defeating Pacific in five and Stanford in three. Down 2-1 against the Tigers,
the Bruins pulled out a 40-38 game four win which included fighting off a previous match-point. Steve Klosterman tallied five of his 15 kills in
the 15-12 game five win. He added 14 kills at .400 the next night vs. the Cardinal while Paul George led the team with 16 at .667….
Pacific had a marathon of a road trip, stunning No. 2 UC Irvine in five one night after falling to UCLA in five. After closely winning the first two
games, and losing the next two, the Tigers hit .615 in game five at UCI (9K-1E-13TA) en route to a 15-10 outcome. Pekka Seppanen totaled 43
kills in the two matches, including a match-high 29 at UCLA. Pacific once again meets the Bruins and Anteaters this weekend in Stockton….
UC Irvine swept Stanford and fell in five to Pacific at home this past weekend. Jayson Jablonsky recorded 13 kills (.417) and six digs in the
win and 17 kills and eight blocks in the loss. David Smith had a match-high eight blocks vs. the Cardinal….
Cal State Northridge split two matches at the Loyola-Chicago Tournament, edged by the host Ramblers in five and sweeping Quincy. Dan
Rhodes led the team in the loss with 19 kills while Mike Gaudino led with 16 kills (.324) in the win. Long Beach and UCSD visit this week….
UC San Diego won the consolation match at the Springfield Tournament, topping Rutgers-Newark in four. The Tritons lost to host Springfield in
three on the first night. Brooks Dierdorff was named to the All-Tournament team after a 64-assist and eight-block outing against the Raiders….
Long Beach State swept Cal Baptist in its lone match this past week. Dan Alexander hit .769 (11K-1E-13TA) with a pair of blocks….
USC dropped a four game match at home to Pepperdine on Friday. Juan Figueroa recorded a career-high 30 kills at a .480 clip….
Hawaii lost a pair at home to UCSB in five and four games. Lauri Hakala came close to a triple-double on night one with 14 kills, 10 digs, and
nine blocks. Mark Ribeiro recorded a team-best 16 kills on night two in his first-ever appearance as a Warrior. USC visits twice this week….
Stanford fell in three at UCI and UCLA. Matt Ceran had 27 kills in six games, 18 in Westwood. Both teams head to Palo Alto this weekend….
PATAK AND SEPPANEN SHARE MPSF MOLTEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Woodland, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara senior opposite Evan Patak (Pleasanton) totaled 50 kills, 10 aces, 22 digs, and six blocks in the
Gauchos’ first two-match sweep over Hawaii since 1987. On night one, he tallied 32 kills and a career-high 17 digs. This is Patak’s second
MPSF honor this season, having won the award January 15….Pacific junior outside hitter Pekka Seppanen (Kuopio, Finland) put away 43 kills
in a pair of five-game decisions this past week at UCLA and UC Irvine. He recorded a career-high 29 kills, while adding five blocks and seven
digs at UCLA. The next night, in Pacific’s upset over then No. 2 UCI, Seppanen recorded 14 kills and four blocks with a team-high 17.5 points…
