Juan Figueroa had 23 kills, 7 digs and 4 blocks and teammate C.J. Schellenberg added 14 kills and 4 blocks to help the No. 14 ranked USC men's volleyball team upset No. 9 Pacific, 30-21, 30-21, 20-30, 30-26, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Sunday (Feb. 25) in USC's Galen Center.
USC-which has won 3 of its past 4 matches- improved to 6-9 overall and 5-7 in the MPSF, while Pacific dropped to 8-9 and 6-7.
Figueroa hit .405. Teammate Matt Pavlovich started for the first time this season and added 12 kills (hitting .391) and 5 blocks, while Matt Mosko returned to the starting lineup for the first time since Jan. 17 and posted a career-best 9 blocks and 3 aces, both match highs. Jimmy Killian had 6 blocks and 6 digs.
For Pacific, Pekka Seppanen had 20 kills (hitting .429), 5 blocks and 4 digs.
USC outhit the Tigers, .288 to .145, and had more blocks, 19.0 to 13.5.
With the first game tied at 8-8, USC went on a 7-0 run and was never threatened as it hit .636 to Pacific's .091. USC broke a 15-15 tie in the second game with consecutive points and then scored the game's final 7 points. The tables turned in the third game as Pacific made major lineup changes and pulled ahead to stay after running off 3 straight points at 12-12 (the Tigers hit .381 in that game to USC's .000). In the final game, USC scored 3 unanswered points to open up a 22-19 lead and carried that edge to finish out the match.
USC next hosts No. 4 BYU in back-to-back MPSF matches on Friday (March 2) and Saturday (March 3), both at 7 p.m. in the Galen Center.
