Oshkosh Defeats the #7 Ranked NAIA Team (02-22-07)
UW-Oshkosh won every other game to defeat Cardinal Stritch University 30-24, 27-30, 30-25, 20-30, 16-14 before a raucous crowd on Wednesday (Feb. 21) in Kolf Sports Center.
The Titans entered the contest ranked #1 according to the latest National Intramural Recreation Sports Association (NIRSA) Division I national poll and the Wolves ranked #7 in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) poll.
The Titans (12-2) started off hot, building a 16-6 lead off of the serve of John Erickson (Jr. - Ripon) who collected three service aces during an eight-point skein. The Wolves (6-9) closed to within 22-18 after a five point scoring run but could not get any closer as the Titans held on for the six-point win.
Game two was close throughout until Cardinal Stritch University built a 22-18 lead after a five-point scoring streak. Trailing 24-19, Aaron Wayne (Jr. - New Berlin) closed the gap to 24-23 forcing a time-out by the Wolves. Cardinal Stritch University held a one-point lead until scoring two consecutive points for a 29-26 advantage. UW-Oshkosh earned a side-out for a 29-27 deficit, but the visitors put down a kill to end the game to tie the match at one game each.
Despite having five serving errors and only 10 kills in game three, UW-Oshkosh relied on hitting and serving errors by Cardinal Stritch University to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Wayne had half of the team's kills as the Titans pulled away from a 21-21 deadlock by outscoring the Wolves 9-4 to end the game.
Game four was all Cardinal Stritch University as they built a 12-3 lead after UW-Oshkosh committed four receiving errors and two hitting errors to start the stanza. The Titans cut the gap to 15-11 before another five- point run by the Wolves put the game out of reach.
The deciding game only had five, two-point runs as UW-Oshkosh started the game up 2-0 and gained the upper hand 12-11 after trailing 11-10. Cardinal Stritch University had their runs to tie the score at 3-3 and to take their first lead of the game at 7-6.
The last mini-run came via the winning score with UW-Oshkosh leading 15-14 after a kill by Nathan Sederberg (Jr. - Racine). The Titans withstood one of the longest rallies of the contest when Wayne sliced a kill between the Wolves' block for the victory.
Quiet all night, reigning NIRSA Division I national player-of-the-year Mike Semrad (Sr. - Waukesha) came to life in the fifth game that featured 13 ties. He led the team with five kills on seven attempts as the Titans had 13 kills on 20 attempts for a .550 hitting percentage.
"It wasn't the greatest match for either team until the fifth game," said head coach Brian Schaefer. "Normally men's matches do not have so many long scoring runs but both teams had let downs on offense. I think the deciding game was a true indicator on how good both teams can be."
Nathan Sederberg led the team with 17 kills and collected five service aces and five digs. Semrad finished the night with 13 kills and added three blocks and Wayne and Erickson each had 12 kills. Andrew Sederberg (Sr. - Racine) dished out 56 assists and had eight digs and Jordan Jung (Sr. - Muskego) led the team with nine digs. Danny Hessling (So. - Greenfield) was limited to six kills but was a perfect three for three in the deciding fifth game.
The Titans finished the contest with 67 kills on a .313 hitting percentage and 14 service aces.
"This is the second year in a row we have beaten them in five games," added Schaefer. "Considering they are a very good scholarship team it says a lot about our program. This type of match gets us ready for our tough tournaments down the road."
