UCSD Falls to Lewis Despite 63 Kills from Spangler, Fritsch and Ehrman

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC San Diego men’s volleyball team got 22 kills from Jason Spangler, 21 kills from Frank Fritsch and 20 kills from Will Ehrman, but it was not enough as the Tritons lost a 33-31, 28-30, 30-28, 23-30, 12-15 decision to Lewis on Wednesday night in RIMAC Arena. The loss drops UCSD to 5-13, while the Flyers improve to 12-6. Lewis had five players with at least 10 kills and the service game on both sides combined for 48 total service errors. Lewis outblocked the Tritons 15.5 – 9.5 and outhit UCSD in the fifth game .353 - .188. UCSD is back in action with a Mountain Pacific Sports Ferderation match at Pacific on Friday, March 9. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in Stockton.
UCSD won game one, despite having five less kills than Lewis in the game. With the score tied at 31-31, Ehrman served up an ace and Tim Dietrich put the game away with a kill at 33-31 UCSD.
Both teams hit well in game two, but it was Lewis with 17 kills and one attack error to push in front early at 15-9. UCSD chipped away and pulled within 23-20 on an Ehrman kill. UCSD got as close as 27-25 on a triple block by Fritsch, Ehrman and Stephen Shaw. After a Lewis point, a kill by Fritsch pulled UCSD within 29-28, but a UCSD attack error gave the match to the Flyers 30-28.
In game three, UCSD would hit at a .520 clip and pulled out the game that was once tied at 24-24. Ehrman had several kills for the following UCSD points and a Fritsch kill put the game away at 30-28 UCSD.
Game four went quickly in favor of Lewis at 13-9, but UCSD rallied to tie the game at 17-17. UCSD would remain in the game, down 23-21, but three Triton errors to close the match forced the decisive game five as Lewis won 30-23.
Lewis scored the first three points of the fifth game, but the Tritons quickly came back to take an 8-7 lead as the teams changed sides. UCSD continued its push to lead 11-9 and forced the Flyers to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, Lewis responded with two kills and a block to lead 12-11 and UCSD called timeout. A kill by Ehrman tied the game at 12-12, but two late UCSD attack errors sealed the match for Lewis.
