Stanford walked away with a win against Quincy in tonight's non-conference match in Burnham Pavilion. The Quincy Hawks came into the match 3-12 for the season and 2-4 in MIVA league play. Stanford entered the match 1-17 and 1-13 in the MPSF. The Cardinal finished the match hitting .326 as a team, notching 23 digs and 10 block assists. Setter Miki Groppi tallied 37 assists. Quincy's John Markendorf led the team with nine kills on 14 attempts. Setter Eric Wooldridge finished with 31 assists.
Stanford got off to a good start in game one as Freshman Kawika Shoji started a 3-1 point advantage from the service line. Stanford had a balanced attack both on the net and out of the back row. The team hit .406 for the first game to Quincy's .182. Matt Ceran and Kawika Shoji had one ace a piece as the Cardinal took game one, 30-22.
Strong play at the net started game two off nicely for the Cardinal. The team had two blocks and two kills off overpasses by Brandon Williams to lead 4-0. Stanford continued to lead the game as Quincy took a time out at 19-14. Freshman Jason Palacios entered the match in the second straight game for Cameron Christoffers in the back row. The game continued in Stanford's favor as Brandon Williams and Matt Ceran finished with a block from the right side attack. The team hit .310 for the game as Williams hit .500 out of the middle.
Quincy started the third game with a libero change, bringing into the match Mike Contee. Stanford continued their steady play both offensively and defensively. Three consecutive hitting errors from Quincy increased Stanford's lead to 16-10 in the middle of the game. Palacios again returned to the court replacing Ceran on the outside getting a kill on his first attempt. At 28-19 the Hawks gained momentum, however it wasn't enough to hold Stanford back. The Cardinal won the third game on a kill by Evan Romero.
The win gives Stanford a 2-17 record and drops Quincy to 3-13. Stanford will continue playing at home on Friday as they face Long Beach State in Maples Pavilion at 7 PM.
