Defensive Effort Fuels Sweep by Brent Johnson, BYU Athletic Communications
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (Mar. 9, 2007)--Joel Silva, Ivan Perez and Yosleyder Cala led a strong defensive effort as No. 3 BYU picked up a crucial MPSF victory over No. 4 UC Santa Barbara, sweeping the Gauchos 36-34, 30-23 and 30-26.
"We did an excellent job passing and serving today," co-head coach Shawn Patchell said. "A lot of credit goes to Joel, Ivan and Cala. We also served exceptionally well and put a lot of pressure on them."
The Cougars (14-4, 10-3 MPSF) were led offensively by Cala and Robby Stowell who each picked up 12 kills. The middle tandem of Rodnei Santos and Russell Holmes had very efficient offensive nights. Each added nine kills while Santos hit .583 and Holmes swung at a .500 clip. BYU also held UCSB standout Evan Patak to just eight kills and .000 hitting on the night.
"We blocked Patak well tonight," Patchell said. "We also passed well of his excellent jump serve."
Patak, who leads the nation in aces, had just one on the night.
UCSB got off to a quick start, jumping out to a 13-10 lead early on. BYU responded, going on a 6-1 run to grasp control of the opening game. A pair of Cala aces capped the run and forced the Gauchos to call a time out. BYU further extended its lead to 21-16 behind tough serving, forcing the Gauchos into consecutive hitting errors. With BYU serving ahead 29-26, UCSB scored three consecutive points to tie the set at 29. The Cougars kept the advantage throughout the extra points and won on a Cala kill.
"The first set was huge for us," Patchell said. "We had several game points. Credit UCSB for fighting back. We were able to make some adjustments and take over."
BYU never trailed in the second set as the Cougars jumped out to an early 7-1 lead to start the game. The Cougars scored four of their first seven points courtesy of blocks including a block solo and assist by Cala. BYU out-hit UCSB .393 to .107 in the second set as the Gauchos only managed nine kills in the game. The Cougars never let go of their early lead, allowing UCSB to cut the lead only to four points once during the set. Holmes took care of BYU's first game point by smoking a service ace to put the Cougars ahead.
After BYU trailed 2-1 in the third set, the Cougars went on another 7-1 run to open a game. The Cougars took a commanding 8-3 lead due to pressure from the service line. Yamil Perez and Cala's serving paced BYU's early run. The Cougars never relinquished their lead, finishing the third set with a Santos kill.
The same two teams face off Saturday evening at 7 p.m. (PST) in Santa Barbara.

BYU Brings Potent Offense to Rob Gym By Tiffany Polfer / Staff Writer (UCSB Dailey Nexus)

It will be a clash between middle-of-the-pack conference foes tonight, with #4 UCSB hosting #3 BYU in a two-match Mountain Pacific Sports Federation battle.
BYU (13-4 overall, 9-3 in the MPSF) has won its last four matches, breaking a four-match losing streak, including a two-match sweep by #1 Pepperdine. Sophomore opposite Yosleyder Cala was recently named the American Volleyball Collegiate Association National Player of the Week, and freshman opposite Robby Stowell was named MPSF Player of the Week. Freshman setter Yamil Perez leads the conference with 13.6 assists per game, good for third in the nation.
The Gauchos (14-6, 10-5 in the MPSF) recently broke a three-match losing streak with two consecutive sweeps of Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne this past weekend.
Senior opposite Evan Patak is not only the mental leader of UCSB, but also the leader in kills - 5.8 per game - and aces at 1.2 per game.
UCSB’s setters have recently begun a trend of spreading the points around to players other than Patak. Patak had an off night against UCLA, only scoring 13 points. However, junior middle blocker Theo Brunner stepped up and led the team with 14. Brunner is second on the team with an average of 3 kills per game, and first in hitting percentage with a .507 clip.
“We realize that Evan is a great player, but we also realize that our attack has to be balanced and unpredictable in order to beat the best teams.” junior outside hitter Michael Fisher said. “Usually if Evan gets in trouble it is an expression of poor passing.”
Even though the Gauchos have out-blocked the majority of their opponents this season, UCSB has recently lagged at the net. During the Gauchos losing streak, UCSB averaged 6 blocks to their opponents 10. The only time the Gauchos out-blocked their opponent during that time was in the 3-1 loss to Cal State Northridge.
“We are listening to each other better as well and, subsequently, blocking is improving.” Fisher said. “We have practiced hard enough so that we don’t have to pull out any magic tricks. We will be automatic killing machines like Patrick Swayze.”

Bad plan. Set the P
I am surprise UCP did not put up more of a fight. BYU is starting to come together. I hope it's just a passing moment, but if it's real, I'm not looking forward to their trip to the Valley.
Good wni for BYU

Just got back from the game. BYU played really well, especially passing and serving. Cala had one of the biggest hits i have ever seen. He hit the ball at least 6" over the block. It was amazing. I cant wait to see the game tomorrow. Should be a good game. Hope Patak plays better, because he is a lot better than he was tonight. Props to BYU for blocking him, and getting a lot of touches.
