Sooter is leaving? That is disappointing. While I think she struggled a bit with her pass-receive (although who didn't on the team?!), her defense was great. I thought she would defniitely be the starting libero next season.

It's tough being a college athlete. Just imagine, in addition, that you are a kid from California headed into Christmas and another Minnesota winter, and another off-season of training for a position to which there are no guarantees attached. Bleak, comes to mind.
You have to really, really want to do it.
Don't get me wrong. Minnesota has lots going for it, including, one sure hopes, a promising new chapter in volleyball. But it ain't for everyone.
Best of luck to Steffi. In volleyball and everything else.

Minnesota seems to have particularly bad luck in keeping out of state players lately: Blatt, Hagarty, Love, Sooter, all of whom had significant playing team or were projected to have significant playing time in a year or so.
"No guaranties attached"? With Granquist and Cowles gone, how could Sooter fail to have significant playing time next year, if she stayed?

I can't imagine anyone from California being content with Minnesota winters. Brrrr...

Speaking of winters, for all you folks from other regions, we're staring at a Brown Christmas this year. No chance of any significant snowfall between now and the 25th they say.
Temps have been decent. High of 35 today in the TC.

I would think that the opportunity to play for Hugh would trump the cold & snowy winters...

If volleyball is your entire life ...
Heck, it's mine. But I'm told most people have additional interests/passions.

I would think that the opportunity to play for Hugh would trump the cold & snowy winters... And, the Mall of America! Seriously, I could understand the cold and snowy winter distraction. But why isn't this a factor Penn State or Nebraska? Really, Minneapolis has more opportunities outside of volleyball than either site and they had a Hall of Fame coach.

College town atmosphere -- and tradition. Makes a huge difference, imo.
Football helps, too. On a conscious and subconscious level. It's part of that atmosphere, for better or worse.

And, to be totally clear here, I have no idea why Steffi is leaving. This is either speculation or generalizing on my part.

If you read the "Packages sent to PARENTS" thread (I may have botched the title a bit), some posters gave excellent advice such as loving the university first and foremost. I'd think this has top priority over such "little" things like the coach (sorry, Hugh), the teammates, and the football program. Tabi Love went to UCLA, but I suspect it had nothing to do with Rick Neweasel's football team.

Some of these same issues have come up recently in other threads. People make jokes about Minnesota's winters, and it is worse than other places in the midwest, I"ll grant you that, but that's more a matter of degree (or a few fewer degrees) than kind. If you're a Cali sun-lover, you're not going to like winter in Lincoln, Evanston, Champaign, Ann Arbor . . . the midwest, period.
It would be interesting to see an analysis of vb players at Big 10 schools who came from sun states: how many left, how many stayed for the duration, and whether the percentage is significantly different from that applicable to non-sun state, out-of-staters. I don't know what Sooter's motivations were, but it isn't like everyone from a warm place decides it was a mistake to come here. E.g., Tan, Gentil, Bratford, Mallakis.
