I personally think this style completely crippled Jessica and took her from the B1G libero of the year to almost falling off the radar. That and she clearly wasn't allowed to roam as much on defense. I think the difference lies more in the fact that this year's team was extremely weak at blocking. One thing that allowed Jessica to capitalize in the past was a slowed-down ball from defenders at the net touching it. She didn't have that luxury as much this year.

Collen Ward moved from warm to cold to be with family and friends. It's a big deal to many players. Much more than weather. But then freezing your a$$ off isn't fun. For some reason, it still surprises me when players transfer for this reason alone. I love my family dearly and missed them more than I ever thought when I went away to college (along with periods of being gleefully rid of them. LOL), so I completely understand the motivation. But, it's only four years. It seems like, unless there is another reason to transfer (weather, overall environment, bad relationship with coach and/or players, changing majors to something that isn't offered, etc.), a player would just stay, since it would only be two years until they could move back and because they would have to adjust to another school.

Favorite moments/highlights? Steffi played very well down the stretch vs Penn State last year in the 5 set upset and dug reasonably well for stretches of this season.
OTOH, Steffi's spectacular leaps and dives for balls already far past her, and her effusive post point celebrations ranked at the top of the conference.
My guess is that Bush really goes for that amped up faux enthusiasm thing.
I suppose Bush wasn't very confident in her passing ability. It seemed downright odd to see the DS in serve-receive hidden behind the passers.
I thought she was a liability at the service line, although her float had improved by the end of this season making her slightly less of a side out lock for Minnesota opponents. Frankly, I was surprised when Bush put her back into a regular rotation at the end of the season because the team seemed to do so much better having more back-row offense. Not letting Whitman or Harms serve or take swings from the back row just somehow seemed wrong...
How did you Gopher fans evaluate Steffi?

I think sooter is not only an awesome player, but an awesome person!!! And her passing abilities needed to be used more often to be honest.. the gophers struggled a lot this year with that and A think it has to do with this new coaching style. last year the gophers didn't have nearly as much trouble in the serve receive area! And having sooter in the back row provided something that the other girls didn't have!!! She fired up that team and was a true competitor. I mean geez have you seen that girl play?? I don't think I have seen a passion like that in awhile. I'm sad to see her go! I would have loved to see her in the Lib position next year.I had a lot of faith in her skills and ability.Especially playing under someone is hard! You really get to see a player blossom when their time has come and I believed her time had come! Whatever school ends up with Sooter has found themselves something special!

Not letting Whitman or Harms serve or take swings from the back row just somehow seemed wrong... Wittman has never really been much of a back row offensive option - so I think what they lacked with having Sooter in for Wittman was more of Wittman's improved defensive skills, not really her back row offensive skills. I wish they would have only used Sooter for Wittman during Wittman's service rotation, like they had been doing for Harms for a few matches. I think prior to switching her to being Wittman's sub, Wittman had something like 14 service errors in 3 or 4 matches. It was not good, especially because the serves that DID make it over the net weren't particularly impressive, either.

Oh gosh...Minnesota's gonna NEED some defensive help now... We're pretty much depending on Lindsay Lawmaster as Libero, because from what i've seen of catlin roberts, she's not even close to the defensive caliber of granquist and christine tan.

I've been told by a pretty reliable source that Bohl is a lot like Hailey Cowles defensively.

Come back? I'd certainly like to see her return. But is she definitely gone? Is she enrolled someplace else for the Spring semester? Is she officially off the team?

Us gophers are so used to getting ditched now that it doesn't even come as a surprise. Minnesota has become such a lost team... Boy oh boy, how much i miss the 2009/ 2010 seasons. Specifically lauren gibbemeyer....and chrsitine tan...and dieter....and love...and now JG and HC ......it's a hard knock life to be a gopher fan.
