When I was a wee lad, many many moons ago, the English translations of Tintin and Asterix helped me get throught the traumas of changing schools and moving to new towns. They were the constants that somehow were in school libraries whereever I moved to.
So it is that I went to see the new film by Steven Spielberg with equal parts anticipation and dread. I wanted to see what Spielberg can do with this material, since the stories involved wild and imaginative narratives and action, giving the film maker carte blanc. Yet I also dreaded to see the "Hollywoodization" of a childhood icon.
I should have trusted Spielberg. This film upheld the childhood memories that I had as well as made its mark as an imaginative exercise in action movie making. The humor was retained, the sense of adventure while in exotic locales and surrounded by intrigue were also retained. This old man walked out of the theatre feeling like he is 14 years old again.

Sounds good. I also enjoyed Tintin and Asterix back in the day.

I teach both these characters & their stories in my French classes. We can't wait to meet up this week to see the movie!
