Really enjoyed this movie....The slack-key soundtrack was beautiful...Alexander Payne (of Sideways fame), created a wonderful blend of a very dark subject, mixed with a tinge of comedy to take the edge off...
I can't link from this computer, but check out You Tube for a beautiful song by Makana called Deep in an Ancient Hawaiian Forest...
BTW- He does a very cool acoustic rendition of the Led Zeppelin song Going to California on You Tube as well.

I like Payne's movies. The trailers are misleading. This is not a comedy. Shailene Woodley, btw, is a dead ringer for a younger Ari Filho. Wish I had a better picture of Ari -- but the U's website is worthless for previous years.

Also...interesting short segment on NPR about the soundtrack for this movie...includes interviews with Payne and some of the contributing slack key artists, icluding Keola Beamer...who said he was reluctant to get involved with a film about Hawaii...because they all were so trite and cliche'...but this one he thought was maybe the best representation of life there.
Again, I'm at work, so I can't link to You Tube...but it's easy to find.

I am curious to know what Hawaiians think about this movie.
Like I was curious about Vowel's book.

I really liked the movie. Everyone I've talked to about it agrees that it was a pretty decent depiction of local lifestyles and issues regarding land and history.
Blob, I agree with Keola in that I cringe whenever I hear about a movie supposedly being about Hawaii -- they usually are trite and ridiculously artificial. I really liked the book so I was disappointed to hear there would be a Hollywood production of it and I was sure I would find it glaringly superficial and offensive. I was actually pleasantly surprised when this movie was not.
Also Blob, I'm a huge slack key guitar fan so I'm happy to see the music getting to a broader audience.

The only way I'd watch this movie is if it was about the band of the same name.

The only way I'd watch this movie is if it was about the band of the same name. South Bay legends! Saw them in December with The Vandals and Black Flag (pre-Rollins lineup). They killed.
