The Susan G Komen Foundation just touched the political third rail of abortion yesterday. This may all die down by the next year's NCAA season, but if there is a backlash I wonder if some schools may decide not to hold the ubiquitous "dig pink" events.I guess the Dig Pink thing is actually from www.side-out.org/ so it might be totally a separate deal. Never mind.

have a link to go with that "third rail" you mentioned? Just Google "Komen" and check for news.

I felt far less pathetic when I asked in my head!

Well, the whole thread was something of a "fail" for me because I wondered if this controversy would affect the "Dig Pink" deal without ever previously realizing who actually is behind "Dig Pink"....
I do think we may see some women's cancer charities explicitly distancing themselves from Komen in the near future.

Komen hasn't copyrighted the color pink yet at least, unlike "for a cure," although it is so ubiquitious with breast cancer funding it's hard not to immediately assume all of the awareness events are Komen-related. Maybe this thread should be moved to politics so people can express opinions?

About seven years ago I signed my club up to do a walk for a cure event. I attended the organizational meeting and I was struck by just how organized and motivated the Komen folks are. I made a remark to a friend who is in cancer research and support groups, she told me that Komen was vergin on being the 800 lb gorilla, that they literally suck all the air out of any and all cancer related fund raising efforts. I told her I thought that was a good thing. She said that breast cancer, while a great cause was also one that is pretty well ahead of all the other cancers. But there are many others that are more in need of research. She also said that Komen was not only sucking up all the cancer fund raising, they are actively seeking to channel all the money going to the other cancer research charities back towards themselves..

Dig Pink may not be associated with Komen, but Volley for the Cure (which is big in Ohio) is directly tied to Komen. www.volleyforthecureohio.comI've only ever worked with Dig Pink for my events, so I can't give any more insight into Volley for the Cure or any potential implications from its association with Komen.

It's my unresearched assumption though that Dig Pink focuses more on the high school volleyball market, is that correct?

I guess my original reaction wasn't so far off base. Until now, these events have always seemed completely innocuous. Komen's decision (whether intentional or not) to politicize themselves may likely have fallout in next year's volleyball season.
I wonder it this could be a boost for other charities to make it clear that they are NOT Komen?

I was ripped to shreds for making this very point on VT less than a year ago. I will accept apologies via private message. ::crickets::

Komen's decision (whether intentional or not) to politicize themselves That is a political statement all by itself. If we're going to have a flame war about this, let's put it on Political Ramblings, shall we?

Sorry, but I don't have much sympathy for the the complaint about Komen taking away from other cancer research. These same organizations have said the same about the attention and money raised for AIDS research.

Time to move this thread to politics. I'm with jdgrout on this one. Just because a poster occasional throws the word "volleyball" in his or her response does not make it germain to this forum (at least the last couple of posts).
