The Side-Out Foundation is the organization behind Dig Pink. It is not affiliated with Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Side-Out was started by Rick Dunetz when he was the head volleyball coach at West Springfield High School in Springfield, VA. A local news station produced a great piece about his story when he first founded Side-Out back in 2004: www.side-out.org/about/our-story/. We are a small organization headquartered in Fairfax, VA, although there are staff members located in MD, FL, NE and TX. As you can read on Side-Out's website (www.side-out.org/about/our-team/), almost everyone has a direct connection to volleyball (except for me , and I've learned that it's an exceptional sport!!).
There are many wonderful breast cancer organizations. Side-Out is unique in that it focuses on involving youths, and most events surround the sport of volleyball. It has its own Board of Directors (www.side-out.org/about/our-team/board-of-directors/) and Scientific Advisors (www.side-out.org/about/our-team/scientific-adivisors/), and it closely monitors the research it chooses to fund. With respect to breast cancer research, Side-Out is currently supporting the following projects:
In addition to funding research, Side-Out offers scholarship and community service awards (www.side-out.org/blog/presenting-the-side-out-ambassador-program-soap/ ) to students who organize and involve their communities in educational and fundraising events for breast cancer.
As I wrote in a blog about the preponderance of pink (www.side-out.org/blog/too-much-pink/), you will notice that Side-Out uses a stylish logo for its Dig Pink events rather than the pink ribbon. It symbolizes the spirit of its events: fun, vibrant and radiating.
All of us at Side-Out are incredibly grateful to the volleyball community for making breast cancer research and patient services a priority. Volleyball is indeed making a difference.
If you ever have any questions about Side-Out or Dig Pink, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. I'm more than happy to talk with you.
Enjoy your weekend, everyone!
