I think another one you can't really overlook is Robbie Stowell. He's led BYU in a lot of their games in kills. Might even lead the team in kills... Not sure...

If a senior can be voted newcomer of the year, and being on a top team is important, then Greg Gaudino, the MB from Pepperdine who transferred from the USC basketball program, would be a good choice.

Never vote for someone whose name I cannot pronounce. Vollyball history suggests vacated awards.

Perez should get it. He's the setter for the number three team in the country and seems to be doing an excellent job. He was also named MPSF player of the week.

I feel like Matt rawson and Yamil perez should share the award.
Matt Rawson is top 5 in the MPSF (i believe) in blocks as a freshman.
Yamil Perez is the leading setter in the assist category in the nation as a freshman. Granted he has a lot of experienced weapons, he's still good.
Take Kawika shoji off there, he's not good yet, Robby Stowell (true freshman) is a legit opposite and should be on that list instead of kawika.
Even Ric cervantes (true freshman) from hawaii is putting together a good year after being benched. Rawson and Cervantes are going to be a really good combo.
Kevin Ker and Garret Muagututia are also a very deadly combination (both are true freshman, stellar players)

Shoji is definitely worthy of mention. He has been the setter on a team that is made up of a bunch of middles starting in other positions (Ceran at OH, Skinner at OH, Romero at OPP). It's basically a team that struggles passing and attacking and yet he has kept that team competitive despite the poor w-l record. I don't think there is an argument that Shoji has less to work with than any other freshman this year. And now he has been moved to OH where he is the team's best passer. Since he has moved to the OH full-time his stats are 114 kills, 40 errs, 220 atts, 4.38 k/g, .336. He has had double digit kills since starting at OH. He also leads the team in digs and aces and is fourth in blocks. He may not be THE Rookie of the Year (IMHO Stowell or Garret are the front runners) but he certainly should be considered.

If I am not mistaken, team success is a big part of the ROY... maybe not the same way as it is for POY, but still. Muagututia is a good player and will be a great player, but his hitting efficiency this year is not high enough for a hitter to get the award, besides his team is only 5th. Muagututia, K.Ker, Rawson, Cervantes, Shoji are doing a great job and would prob. be in an All-Freshman team if such thing officially existed... but they still won't be getting the ROY.
Not sure if the ROY could go to a non-mpsf player, but William Price (George Mason) has probably been the most important player to his team all year... But we all know how good the conference over there is, so maybe he won't get it.
My guess is that BYU's Yamil Perez will be the guy. As the starting setter for the #2 Team, he has pretty much played all year and done a great job, the biggest newcomer contributor in the mpsf. Perez's teammate Robby Stowell is next in line but his opp job has been way easier thanks to the talent in the other OH positions.
So... Y. Perez it is.

Yamil Perez is doing a great job. He has to set several people who really need different sets to be effective. Robby is incredible, but hitting starts with a good set. If the ROY is awarded based on the overall impact on the team I'd have to give Yamil the slight edge. BYU's setter was injured very early in the season and I hate to think where the team might be if Yamil had not been able to fill the void.

As the setter he is touching the ball on almost every serve. Hitters don't have that opportunity (unless your name is Evan Patak) and that will put his stock up for the NOY. He also leads the country as a Freshman in Assists which even Carlos Moreno didn't do the year he won POY. If I remember correctly he was #2 behind Hildebrand.

it definitely has to be greg gaudino.. yes he doesnt give u big time #'s but the consistancy he gives you. hes 1 of only 2 pepperdine players to play EVERY game. last time i checked he was in top 10 of hitting %, gets a LOT of controlled/soft blocks, you can ask marv about gaudino, he will tell u gaudino was jus as important to this team as carroll/winder. great energy, what else can u ask for?
