Newbury Captures First Ever ECAC Men’s Volleyball Championship
BROOKLINE, MA – The #1 seeded Nighthawks of Newbury College were crowned as the 2007 ECAC Men’s Volleyball Champions at Papas Gymnasium in Brookline, defeating #2 seeded Raiders of Rivier College by a score of 3-1 (30-28, 30-20, 25-30, 30-24). The Nighthawks wrap up the year standing at 30-12, and winning its first ever ECAC championship.
Championship Game:
In their fourth match-up of the season, Newbury came out on top earning a three-peat for the season and the 2007 ECAC men’s volleyball championship crown. This is the Nighthawks first ECAC championship in the history of the program, while making it to the final match the past two seasons. Junior captain Jay Neveu (Riverside, RI/East Providence) was named the tournaments Most Valuable Player while posting 9 kills and 3 blocks in the win. Freshman Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) pounded down 15 kills and blocked 5 Raiders hits. Bryan McDermand (Palatine, IL/Montini Catholic) came up big for the Nighthawks with an impressive line of 9 kills, 5 blocks and defensively digging up 14 in the victory. Newbury as a team ended the game with an impressive 18.5 team blocks in the championship victory.
The Raiders were led by senior captain Zach Stedman (Riverside, RI) who ended his career with a double double as he pounded down 20 kills and had 11 digs in the game. Rookie Zach Hansen (Shelton, CT) was all over the court today dishing out 53 assists and defensively came up big with 20 digs. Senior captain and defensive specialist Justin Andreozzi (Barrington, RI) set a single season dig record with 23 and also dished out 5 assists in the match. Fellow teammates Matt Ferreira (Lincoln, RI) contributed 14 kills and Scott Wright (Salem, NH) contributed 13 in the season ending game.
The Nighthawks complete their impressive season with their first ever 2007 ECAC championship and an impressive record of 30-12, (8-3 NEVCA). The Raiders end their season with an 18-13 record and a NECVA record of 10-1.
Semi-Finals Match-Ups: In the semi-final match-ups, the #1 seeded Nighthawks of Newbury College defeated the #4 seeded Gulls of Endicott college in four games with a final score of 3-1 (30-21, 30-19, 25-30, 30-20). The Gulls were eliminated from the tournament while the #3 seeded Hawks of SUNY New Paltz were also eliminated falling to the #2 seeded Raiders of Rivier College with a final score of 3-1 (23-30, 30-27, 21-30, 22-30).
Semi-Final Game #1 Match-Up:
In the first semi-final match-up, the #1 seeded Nighthawks of Newbury College defeated the #4 seeded Gulls of Endicott College in four games with a final score of 3-1, (30-21, 30-19, 25-30, 30-20). The Nighthawks took the first two games while the Gulls fought hard to take the third game. Newbury came on strong in the fourth to win and take the victory.
The Nighthawks offense was led by junior Matthew Hartmann (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam) who dished out 44 assists and also had 8 digs in the match. Senior Captain Ken McNeeley (Forest Hill, MA/Fallston) was huge at the net for the Nighthawks pounding down 12 kills and blocked 8 hits from the Gulls in the win. Fellow teammates captain Jay Neveu (Riverside, RI/East Providence) and rookie Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) both contributed at the net knocking down 10 kills each. The Nighthawks defense was led by the libero specialist Nicholas Horrocks (New Bedford, MA/Greater New Bedford) who had 26 digs in the victory.
The Gulls were led by rookie A.J. Witkofsky (Scotia, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) who converted on 18 kills and managed to dig up 5 balls on the day. The Gulls defense was led by Dan Coleman (Millis, MA/Millis) who had 20 digs on the day. Rookie Ben Foster (Penfield, NY/Penn) also had a great performance dishing out 43 assists and added 12 digs in the loss. Eric Smith (Concord, MA/Concord Carlisle) contributed a double double to his team with 10 kills and 12 digs for the last game of the Gulls season.

The #2 seeded Raiders of Rivier College defeated the #3 seeded Hawks of SUNY New Paltz in the second semi-final match-up with a final score of 3-1 (23-30, 30-27, 21-30, 22-30). The Raiders came out ready to play and took the win in the first game. The Hawks fought back and ended up on top in the second game. From there it was all Raiders as they took the next two games to seal the semi-final victory.
The Raiders rookie Zach Hansen (Shelton, CT), had a busy day dishing out 43 assists, 3 kills, 2 blocks and 8 digs in the semi-final match today. Fellow rookie Matt Ferreira (Lincoln, RI) pounded down 17 kills, blocked 7 Hawks hits and dug up 3 balls in the win. Justin Andreozzi (Barrington, RI) had 9 digs and was all over the court on defense. Rookie Zack Phillips (Hanover, VA) contributed 10 kills, 4 blocks and 4 digs on the day. Senior captain Zack Stedman (Riverside, RI) playing in his second to last game of his career added 10 kills, 1 block and 8 digs in the victory.
The Hawks were led by rookie Stephen Pendleton (Oneida, NY/Oneida) who recorded 5 digs, 3 blocks and dished out 35 assists in his last match this season. Fellow teammate Joshua Spiro (Island Park, NY/West Hempstead) contributed 7 kills and 2 blocks in the loss.
