CHICAGO - Senior James Grunst tied his career high with six service aces and junior opposite hitter Ian Anderson led the way on the attack with 12 kills to guide the No. 11 Loyola University Chicago men's volleyball team to a 3-0 win (30-23, 30-24, 30-25) against No. 7 Penn State on Saturday in Alumni Gym.
Loyola (22-6, 8-4 MIVA) held a 10-4 advantage over Penn State in service aces, led by Grunst who equaled his career-high mark in service aces initially set on Jan. 16 against MSOE. Grunst also had a flawless night on the attack with nine kills on 12 swings and no errors (9-0-12) for a match-high .750 hitting percentage.
The Ramblers are 18-1 when hitting above .300 on the attack, after out-hitting the Nittany Lions .370 to .270. While Anderson had the team-high in kills for the 20th match this season, middle blocker Nick Lamoureux added to the efficient attack with nine kills on 13 attempts for a .538 mark (9-2-13). Setter Brian Guntli was credited with a match-high 44 assists.
Loyola was slightly edged 6-5 in blocks with Lamoureux's two assist blocks as the only player with multiple blocks. In the back row, libero Zach Bailey had a match-high 12 digs for his 18th double-figure match of the season.
LU never trailed in game one and raced out to an 8-4 to take control of the match early, led by five kills from Anderson to help Loyola cruise to a 30-23 victory, its widest margin of the match. With game two tied at 16, Grunst came through with three consecutive service aces to take a 19-16 lead and momentum of the game. The Milwaukee, Wis., native tallied five of his six service aces to help Loyola to a 30-24 lead. After trailing 8-7 early in game three, the Ramblers scored three consecutive points to seize a two-point lead which would grow to as big as seven at two different instances in the match. Both Anderson and Joe Guntli compiled four kills in the match-clinching 30-25 game-three win.
Penn State (20-7, 12-0 EIVA) was led on the attack by 13 kills from Matt Anderson and 33 assists by setter Luke Murray. Anderson also chipped in a match-high three blocks while three different Nittany Lions had six digs apiece.
Loyola opens the MIVA Shondell/Dunlap Division tournament against Quincy University at 7 p.m. on Friday in Alumni Gym.
