Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week
April 16, 2007
Paul Carroll - Pepperdine University Sophomore, Right Side/Opposite Hitter, 6-7 (Forester, Australia – Great Lakes H.S.)
Paul Carroll, a 6-7 right side/opposite hitter for then-No. 1 Pepperdine University, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week. He earned the award for his strong performance last week in wins over two top 10 opponents – then-No. 8 Cal State Northridge and then-No. 5 UC Santa Barbara. In the match against Cal State Northridge, Carroll tallied 18 kills in 36 attempts with six errors for a .333 hitting percentage. He added one ace, five digs and two total blocks in the 3-0 win. He followed that up with 22 kills in 42 attempts and seven errors for a .357 hitting percentage in the Waves’ 3-1 win over the Gauchos. He added three aces, seven digs and eight total blocks. The win over UC Santa Barbara gave Pepperdine an MPSF single-season record of 21 conference victories. For the week, Carroll averaged 5.71 kills, a .346 hitting percentage, 1.71 digs and 1.43 blocks per game. Carroll's honor marks the 16th time that a player from Pepperdine has been named Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men’s National Player of the Week, and the second player this year, as Jonathan Winder earned the honor on February 5. The Waves are coached by Marv Dunphy.

Glad to see him recognized, he has had a great year. Also good to see that there is a California team with an MVP caliber player from outside of the USA & Puerto Rico. I thought only teams outside of California had to do that. I haven't seen or heard anyone complaining about that, just about BYU's foreigners. Any responses?

It's only the foreign players for any team with questionable elligiblity issues that are questioned.

To my knowledge at BYU they have all been cleared every year and taken whatever measures necessary to become eligible. I know UH sat some of their players as dictated by the NCAA as did BYU. And BYU did it mostly as a precaution. I'm glad to see these foreign players as they definitely raise the level of competition and make the game much more enjoyable.

That was a cut and paste straight from the article on AVCA's webpage. It obviously is an error. I found a couple other errors in articles this morning on other sites about BYU men's volleyball regarding the years they won championships and their record at the FF.

The AVCA site always refers to the team the player of the week is on as "then # whatever" for some reason.
