For a team that had about two weeks to prepare for a tournament that can win it an Olympic bid, the U.S. men's volleyball team has certainly looked worthy of a trip to London. It has dominated the NORCECA Olympic qualifying tournament at Long Beach State, winning each of its pool matches in 3-0 sweeps to advance to today's semifinals. It's been a total team effort, too, with the American squad showing scoring ability at all attack positions. The one trait that stands out, though, is the team's ability at the service line. The U.S. leads the eight teams in the tournament in aces with 29, an average of 3.2 per game, and they have been spread out among a variety of players. Whether its Matt Anderson's array of middle-court serves that break like sliders and curves in baseball, Paul Lotman's heavy jump serves or Clay Stanley's variety of angles, the U.S. has put opponents on the defensive throughout. www.dailybreeze.com/sports/ci_20599653/u-s-mens-volleyball-players-serve-their-country

To put it mildy, Trinidad and Tobago and Costa Rica are teams that wouldn't even compete with the top teams in the NCAA. Mexico is just a few notches better. USA up to this point has done what they've been expected to do. If there is any team that I have been impressed with it is Canada. Schmitt has been bombing away from the OPP spot and they took care of Cuba in three pretty easy sets. Cuba has been underwhelming but can elevate their play at a moment's notice. I expect them to play much better against the USA knowing that there is much more on the line. Today is the first real day of competition for Team USA.
