2007 MIVA All-Conference Teams Announced
Ohio State’s Daniel Mathews named Player of the Year, OSU’s Pete Hanson named Coach of the Year and Ball State’s Jeff Schmitz and IPFW’s Matt Pliski share Freshman of the Year honors
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association has announced its All-Conference selections for the 2007 season. By a vote of the conference coaches, Ohio State’s Daniel Mathews (S, Sr., Shorewood, Wis.) has been named the MIVA Player of the Year and Buckeye coach Pete Hanson was selected as the Coach of the Year. Ball State’s Jeff Schmitz (S, Fr., Fenton, Mo.) and IPFW’s Matt Pliski (L, Fr., St. Charles, Mo.) share Freshman of the Year honors.
Mathews guided the Buckeyes to a 10-2 conference record and the regular season MIVA championship. He averaged 12.53 assists per game in conference play, ranking second in the league. Mathews averaged .63 kills, .42 aces, .91 digs and .79 blocks per game in conference play.
Hanson is in his 23rd season with Ohio State and now has been named the Coach of the Year seven times. He has won 10 regular season championships including the 2007 title and has won the MIVA Tournament six times.
Schmitz averaged 10.95 assists per game in conference matches, ranking fifth. He ranked 20th in digs per game at 1.36. Schmitz averaged .63 kills, .13 aces and .54 blocks per game in league play.
Pliski averaged 2.02 digs per game in conference matches, ranking fifth in the league. He had a .944 reception percentage in handling 356 attempts in conference play.
Regular season champion Ohio State has six players receiving All-Conference honors. Joining Mathews on the first team is teammate Layne Dreven (MH, Sr., Pittsburgh). Named to the second team from Ohio State were John Albertson (MH, Jr., Ballwin, Mo.), Robbie Klein (OH, Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio), Conor Martin (L, Jr., Avon Lake, Ohio) and Dan Meske (OH, Sr., Willow Spring, Ill.). Loyola and IPFW had four players each receive All-Conference honors. Loyola’s first team selections include Zach Bailey (L, Sr., Glendale, Wis.), James Grunst (MH, Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) and Brian Guntli (S, 6-3, Sr., St. Louis, Mo.). Ian Anderson (OPP, Jr., Wauwatosa, Wis.) was named to the second team for the Ramblers. IPFW’s first team selections included Colin Lundeen (S, Sr., Victoria, B.C., Canada), C.J. Macias (OH, Jr., Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Josh Stewart (MH, Jr., St. Mary’s, Ont., Canada). Brock Ullrich (OH, Jr., Winfield, Ill.) was a second team selection for the Mastodons. Ball State and Lewis had three selections each. Ball State’s Nick Meyer (OA, Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) was a first team selection while Matt McCarthy (MA, So., Wheaton, Ill.) and Ian Peckler (L, Jr., Vernon Hills, Ill.) were second team selections. For Lewis, Jared Dayton (OH, Jr., Laguna Hills, Calif.) was named to the first team while Drew Pickering (OH, So., Wauwatosa, Wis.) and Billy Sahagian (MB, So., Bartlett, Ill.) were second team selections. Quincy’s Peter Coley (OPP, Fr., Evanston, Ill.), a second team selection, rounds out the 2007 team.
