Please give him the respect and love he deserves at this difficult time for his friends and family. I absolutely agree. Rest in Peace, Jon.

It has been updated to say instead "The Van Nuys Police Department says is [sic] does not suspect foul play." The reporting itself is suspicious since there is no "Van Nuys Police Department", Van Nuys is a suburb of Los Angeles served by the LAPD.

The reporting itself is suspicious since there is no "Van Nuys Police Department", Van Nuys is a suburb of Los Angeles served by the LAPD. My city, Covington, contracts for police service from the King County Sheriff. The people driving the Covington police cars are sheriff deputies. But if somebody reported on a press release from the "Covington Police Department" I wouldn't automatically assume it was bogus.

It's technically the Van Nuys Division of LAPD. There is a Van Nuys Police Station (several, actually). Nothing out of sorts with the reporting.
Jon's death was a tragic accident - emphasis on "accident." Nothing more, nothing less (and no, I'm not just guessing). My sympathy and condolences to his family.

RIP Jon, if you knew him when he was young, you knew a sweet natured, intelligent, and shy person...a little different but really good hearted...whatever happened over the years were hard on him, you could see the physical toll, and I always felt some emotional problems were attached, but life ain't always easy, and people are complex and not perfect. Please give him the respect and love he deserves at this difficult time for his friends and family. A complicated and extremely talented man, not easy to pigeon hole him anywhere... Well said... RIP Jonny and May you find the love and respect you so wanted and deserved in the heavens. You are missed.

But if somebody reported on a press release from the "Covington Police Department" I wouldn't automatically assume it was bogus. That happens throughout California. Dublin Police (east of Oakland) has cars and uniforms that are different than the Alameda County Sheriff's Dept even though they provide the actual police services. There's a city in Sacramento County that theoretically has its own police force and police chief even though they're actually working for the county sheriff's dept. My own community has a fire department that's marked with the community's name even though fire services are contracted out to the fire department of a nearby city. Not sure about the reporting. I always get my places in Southern California mixed up. It's really difficult to figure out what are places that are just neighborhoods of LA and what are independent cities or unincorporated areas. If you look at a map of the entire city of Los Angeles, you get to wonder how any city could ever get that big in area but with so many different cities and unincorporated areas along the way. That a TV station in SLO might get some details wrong about something that happened in LA wouldn't surprise me.

Jon did a clinic for me a number of years ago. He was my introduction to GM2.
Learned a lot in a couple of days from him. He was a little intense for some of the kids, but the knowledge he had was amazing.

FYI, Mike Dodd said in a Facebook post that suicide has been ruled out and it looks like an accidental death due to drug interactions.

I think it would be best for all of us to leave speculation out of this.

Thanks to the SLO Trib. for an excellent article and to those past student athletes that stepped up.

I rather respect that he had a brilliant mind for the game of volleyball, but I thought that his teams rather underachieved given all the hype surrounding his teams. Didn't they only make 2 NCAA Tournaments in his 6 full years? I've paid attention to Wichita State, and their fans were elated that they were able to schedule Cal Poly in 2008. They were pleased that a highly ranked team would be facing them and hopefully boosting their strength of schedule. Of course it didn't turn out that way and they were pissed.

What his teams did between 05 & 07 was huge. I think that 08 team was a let-down, can't remember if he still had Waller & Atherstone that year. Don't think he had the best recruits, but he re-loaded with Keddy & Graven in 09-10, but that fell apart with his obsessive behavior on/off the court.
