So for us internationally ignorant, any surprises on the international rosters for vball Olympics? I know Serbia had a number of injuries; which if any stars are missing for them? And is the "hammer" coming for China? Can't remember her name, although it seems like her name is on the roster; I know she has been inured and was a question mark.

And is the "hammer" coming for China? Can't remember her name, although it seems like her name is on the roster; I know she has been inured and was a question mark. Serbia is missing: Sanja Malagurski & Brizitka Molnar (the starting OHs when Serbia won the Euros and split with the U.S. in Grand Prix), star OH Jelena Nikolic, and back-up setter Ana Antonijevic. And just to spite them, starting opp Brakocevic and 4th-on-the-depth-chart-now-starting-OH Malasevic both suffered injuries this week, are not training yet, and are doubtful for London. For China, the "hammer" Wang Yimei is in the roster but hasn't played in a while. We just don't know whether she will be recovered in time and what kind of shape she is in. They are otherwise complete. Like Wang, there are several difference-making players from contenders who are injured but still on rosters (Kosheleva-RUS, Natalia-BRA, Darnel-TUR) and how they recover will be a determining factor in how the Games though. No one can hold a candle to Serbia in the injury complaints department. They are down to #5 and 6 on the depth chart at the most important position (OH) and actually had Brankica Mihajlovic naturalized from Bosnia as a stop-gap.

I posted in another thread.. I have a hard time believing that someone who had surgery on their ankle a month and a half ago will be at top, Olympic form, 10 days from now.
I doubt we'll see much of Kosheleva for Russia.

Checking China's roster-surprised that Chu Junling was named over Fan Linlin for the 3rd OH spot
Brenda Castillo should also be listed on the 'injury' list

Castillo is not injured. She is back and playing (very well) at the PanAm Cup. She'll be in London.

Holy Cow! Serbia will be missing a lot of players:
Brakocevic, Nikolic, Malagurski, Molnar, Antonijevic, Popovic, Malasevic
Such a pity to see a powerhouse team like Serbia lose majority of their stars due to injury. With a full squad, Serbia could compete for a medal. Just imagine Nikolic and Djerisilo in the OH, Rasic and Krsmanovic in the Middle, Brakocevic in the Opp, Ognjenovic as the setter and Cebic as Libero...
With the exclusion/loss of some players from Brazil, Turkey, China, Serbia and even USA, I think Pool A doesn't look as "competitive" as it will be..

Lo Bianco is what keeping this Italian team as a legitimate medal contender. Without her (and having Rondon as back-up), Italy's chances are slim. Cardullo is also another player that could have been one of the best in her position in the world if not for those injuries.
As for Russia, I'm just puzzled on who will start as OHs and Opp. One things for sure Gamova will be one of the 3...

Djerisilo played as OH in 2008 and I have to say her performance was awful. She's an opposite and her ball control is not that great.

Wait, so Brakocevic is out?? Brakocevic is still expected to go to London. And Terzic will likely bring Malesevic also. I expect that Brakocevic will be playing with a bandaged left wrist (had surgery last year), a bandaged thumb (since this summer) and now a bad ankle as well. In their current shape, I think Serbia will have a very hard time qualifying for the QFs. United States, Brazil, China and Turkey will likely advance.

Turkey impresses me, but we'll see how they handle the Olympic pressure against, imo, the 3 medal contender favorites in USA, BRA & CHN. I don't think Italy is gelling like they did last year and Russia is an unknown.

You could have listed Sykora as an injury. I know it was a while ago, but it seems clear she would have been on the team if not for that bus crash.
