In reading an AP story about the US-Brazil match my wife pointed out the following paragraph:
"Larson, a wing spiker making her Olympic debut, hit a floater to put the Americans up 23-17 in the first set. She spiked for set point, with Brazil looking out of sorts."
Does international volleyball really refer to Outside Hitters as "Wing Spikers"?

Sometimes, but what I want to know is when has Larson ever "hit a floater"? I saw 70% of her NCAA games and a good bit of her pro/NT career, and it's unimaginable that she would do anything other than jumpserve. That paragraph kinda reads like it was awkwardly translated from a foreign-language press release.

They also use left-wing spikers or right-wing spikers aka left-side hitters/right-side hitters.

To me it sounds like something you might find in a poultry processing plant: "... and that thing over there is the wing spiker, but we sometimes call it the crucifix...."

First time I heard the term used was when Arie Selinger came to give a coach's clinic.

I saw that in an L.A. Times article, and just figured it was another ignorant sportswriter covering their first volleyball match of their life.
