Aside from all the dates that obviously vary from year to year, and some procedural stuff related to submitting bids to host, the only changes I notice in the Determination of Championship Participation section of this year's Pre-Championships manual are: - The addition of the American Athletic Conference to the list of automatic bids - The adjustments to the base RPI formula have changed to the following: In the 2012 manual, the penalty was applied for playing the majority of matches against / losing to teams ranked 150 and above in the RPI (or non-DI teams). Where are you getting that?

Likewise for the Selection Criteria section, the most relevant portion of which is:
(The less relevant sections not included here are related to the definition of countable competition (essentially, 4-year varsity intercollegiate teams), the selection timeline, and the policy for certification of athlete eligibility.)

And here's the Championship Host Manual, divided into three parts due to size:

Looks like using Pablo and AVCA is off the books? Only supposed to use RPI?

Below is a summary of all the relevant info from the Pre-Championships manual. Note that all of the wording in italics is my own (I removed/replaced some of the excess language used by the NCAA in an effort to condense and simplify things), and I also consolidated some parts into the "Other" section at the bottom.
These are the basic selection criteria used for selection in all NCAA sports:
● Won-lost record; ● Strength of schedule; and ● Eligibility and availability of student-athletes for NCAA championships.
The Primary Criteria below may also be considered for Women's Volleyball:
● Rating Percentage Index. ● Head-to-head competition. ● Results versus common opponents. ● Significant wins and losses.
If a decision cannot be reached using only the criteria above, ALL of the Secondary Criteria below will be evaluated as well:
● Late-season performance (last 10 games). ● Eligibility and availability of student-athletes. ● Location of contest.
Additionally, input is provided by regional advisory committees for consideration.
The following evaluative tools are made available to the committee for use in the selection process:
● RPI ● Regional advisory committee rankings ● Division I record ● Overall RPI ● Non-conference record ● Non-conference RPI ● Conference record ● Conference RPI ● Road record ● Record in last 10 games ● Record against teams ranked 1-50 by RPI ● Record against teams ranked 51-100 by RPI ● Record against teams ranked 101-200 by RPI ● Record against teams ranked below 200 by RPI ● Record against other teams under consideration ● Head-to-head ● Significant wins and losses ● Results against common opponents ● Results against teams already receiving at-large bids ● Site of match ● Other circumstances that could affect results (e.g. injuries)
Other policies/guidelines related to selection and bracketing:
● To be considered during the at-large selection process, a team must have an overall won-lost record of .500 or better. ● Host sites will be awarded to the seeded teams that submit a bid that meets the requirements for hosting. ● In the event that a seeded team doesn’t submit a bid that meets the requirements, the sport committee will maintain the current policy of geographic consideration when assigning the host sites. ● The committee will use the geographic consideration to help maintain the balance of integrity of the selection. ● When pairing teams, the committee will avoid conference matchups in the first and second rounds of the championship. ● In the event that multiple regional hosts are seeded in the same quarter of the bracket, the lower-seeded (higher number) team may be moved one seed in order to separate hosts.

mikegarrison -- The registration page states that "NCAA.org requires the use of an official e-mail address from a member school or conference," but I'm not sure what constitutes an "official e-mail address". All I know is that my @school.edu email address worked. I guess you'd just have to go to the URL I provided above and see if it would take your address or not.
volleyguy -- I'm not sure the NCAA would approve of posting those entire manuals here. In fact, after quoting the excerpts above, I've been wondering if there could potentially be any copyright infringement issues with doing that. The Terms & Conditions on their site state that "All content, including photographs, statistics, and charts, are property of the NCAA and cannot be rebroadcast, repurposed, reposted or duplicated in any form without the expressed written consent of the NCAA." (Emphasis on "reposted" added by me.)
(If anybody more knowledgeable about copyright laws believes my original posts would indeed be considered a violation, please let me know and I'll remove them. The summary version I just posted contains all the important info anyway, but it's not copied verbatim from their document, so I'd hope that would still be ok in any case?)

Looks like using Pablo and AVCA is off the books? Only supposed to use RPI? Actually, it's just the opposite, but that only becomes evident by reviewing previous manuals. The 2011 version included the following: This no longer appears in the 2012 and 2013 editions. So even though Pablo/AVCA/etc are not listed among the tools provided to the committee, the fact that they are no longer explicitly forbidden can be interpreted as implicit approval for allowing the committee to consider them.

Thanks stc23. I'll take my chances with the NCAA and claim fair use.

Thanks stc23. I'll take my chances with the NCAA and claim fair use. Um... While I appreciated the chance to read the manual, dumping the entire document out as a PDF is pretty much the exact definition of what is NOT allowed under the "Fair Use" doctrine.

www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.htmlIn this case, I would say that the posts by stc meet the criteria. They are intended to be educational and they only reprint the relevant parts of the manual. Dumping the entire manual here is a lot more questionable. That is especially so if the NCAA itself has made efforts to restrict distribution.
