No, she doesn't. If they run a 6-2, neither setter plays the front row. I'm not talking about this year's modified 5-1.

This is my lineup for next year if I'm coach. (Which I'm not) Just my preference. Tell me what you like about it and what you don't. OH1- Daly Santana OH2- Karlie Hauer/Sarah Wilhite MB1- Tori Dixon MB2- Hannah Tapp MB3- Paige Tapp RS1- Ashley Wittman RS2- Hauer/Wilhite Emergency RS- Paige Tapp Setter #1- Alexandra Palmer Setter #2- Katie Schau Libero- Morgan Bohl (really started to look good plus a whole summer training solely as it will be an immense help!) DS- Lawmaster Bench Riders- Mau, White, Lindstedt, Israel Never ever going to happen.

I think the potential of an extra attacker/blocker outweighs the need for an extra setter though. Ugh... I give up, I'm brainwashed right now. Who will surprise in the starting lineup come next year? This year was Santana for sure, when the announced her against James Madison, nobody knew anything about her or what to expect. And look at how she turned out!

I was impressed with Dixon's blocking against Penn State. I had to leave shortly into the third set, but I thought her blocking was the reason for Minnesota taking over that middle portion of the match. She completely read Hancock when she was in.

I was laughing nonstop for about a minute after Hancock tried to crush it on 2, little did she know Dixon was going up with her and stuffed her!

I wonder if the Gophers might be on the lookout for another middle transfer. If they can get one of the quality of Knudsen, might be easier to move Dixon to opposite (although I still don't like the idea of no veteran middles at all).

Actually there were some pretty good videos of Santana last summer playing for Puerto Rico. She was a primary passer for them all 6 rotations and had the jump serve already. So, not a total surprise to some.

Too many unknowns for me at this point. I'll list them:
1. How good is Shau setting? Is she comparable to Palmer? If not, then no 6-2. How is her block? How is her defense?
2. If Hugh goes with a 5-1 with Palmer and somebody is hitting over her down the line, would he pull her for a blocking sub and have somebody else set for that rally like he did with the Logan Tom? Santana maybe?
3. Can Wilhite be ready to be a primary passer her freshman season?
4. How good is Mau? What are her strengths?
5. Are there going to be any transfers? A middle or libero perhaps?

I'm hoping t here will be more opportunities this year to see the team in the spring and also in August.

It's going to be very interesting and it's REALLY hard to predict what will happen.
First, as with any team, it's about chemistry. Can the new pieces fit with the old pieces to form an effective whole. On paper, the talent level should be fine, but that's just one part of the puzzle. Illinois this year showed what great talent, but spotty chemistry can lead to.
Second, can the freshman perform at an elite level, at least as the season wears on. Any number of teams have very talented freshman every year. Some can make an immediate impact, some can't, and some can, but not reliably. It's a big unknown.
Nice that they have some major players returning in Dixon and Wittman (Santana and others as well) which should ease the transition. But, again, Illinois had some key returning players, yet fell well short of expectations. [Note: I don't have it in for IL. I went to law school there, and I'm a big fan. But, this season's team is a great example of good talent not always being enough.]

MN will lose Harms, Knudsen, and Tabberson but retains Wittman, Santana, and Dixon. They have less offense to replace than Illinois had to. (R)uffda has suggested some interesting line-up possibilities for next year. It will be interesting to see what McCutcheon does now that he will have an entire off-season and fall practice to work with the team. Given the lack of a clear libero, I am intrigued by his line-up of replacing the middles with the setter should Dixon move to OPP. Hauer has shown she can pass so it is possible she could become a six rotation player. The heck with the final four! Let's get to August!

If Minnesota runs a 5-1 does anybody know if Israel can put up a block? Or how good of a setter she is? Just curious if she could be put in there a bit like Tabberson. Also I just watch Mau's recruiting videos. She seems to have some power, but not very consistent in the videos I saw, but she wasn't playing with the best talent either. She only started playing volleyball in 9th grade, so I think she is pretty raw. volleyballrecruits.net/Tyler%20Marie%20(Kalei)_Mau

Is Israel going to be a contributor? 6' setter and I've never seen any discussion there.

Minnesota needs a setter. They have Katie Schau coming in for 2013 and Samantha Seigler-Swenson in 2015. They will need a back up for 2014 unless they feel that Israel can fill that role. This is the area where the McNeil transfer really hurt.
