ACC Pre Season Poll released late yesterday afternoon.
FSU gets the nod from ACC coaches for 3rd year in a row to take the ACC Title in 2014. A very close race at the top as Duke and UNC noted as top Contenders..
With 15 teams in the ACC scheduling top teams to play each other 2 times in a season becomes an issue.. FSU plays Duke only once this season and that is at Duke..FSU plays UNC at home and Away.
Fortunately, UNC does play Duke 2 times this season and it may come down to this match up once again as it did in 2013 to determine the ACC champion for 2013.
Congratulations to Libero-Katie Mosher, OH-Nicole Walch and MB-Sarah Burrington for being named to 2014 ALL ACC Pre Season team.

Thoughts on the #13 ranked FSU's 3-1 win over #7 ranked Nebraska last night:
Of note is the senior leadership on the court of the two captains, setter Wickstrom and libero Mosher. They both demonstrated a strong calm on the court when in the 4th set FSU was down 1-7 and 2-9 to start that set. This team rallied on a strong run to tie the set then pull ahead to take the win.
The OHs Walch and Horton delivered on offense and defense. Both had double doubles and used a variety of shots to keep Nebraska's defense guessing.
Freshman Right Side hitter, Kubura came in midway through match and added another level of play that seemed to catch the Nebraska defense. Transfer Mercedes Vaughn also adds powerful hitting on right.. Would like to see her in middle too as option...
Libero Mosher passed well and kept rallies alive with timely digs. In all 33 digs in 4 sets.
The 6-2 wit setters Wickstrom and Luke continues to work well as it allows for a fast offense and hitting options .
This is only one win and honestly it could have just as easily gone to Nebraska as the final 3 sets were only won by 2 points..
The Nebraska fan base is REAL DEAL .. Over 8865 Nebraska fans.. A new record attendance in their new Volleyball facility- The Devaney Center

Florida State sweeps @ Iowa State today (21,16,11)
The blocking was the winning factor in the match. FSU outblocked Iowa State with 14 team blocks vs. their 3. As this was only the 2nd match of the season, the new players are finiding their rhythm and blending well for strong team chemistry.
This win will give the extra momentum needed to take on the Gators Sep 4th @ 6 PM EST in Tully. That match can be viewed on ESPN3.
Hoping this 2-0 record will help the Noles move into the TOP 10 rankings with this weeks AVCA poll.
GO NOLES !! #LivingALegacy

Florida State moves up to #7 in coaches poll out 9-8
They are now 5-0 after BIG WINS vs. Nebraska, Iowa State, Florida, Marquette and American
Noles are finally home this weekend and host: Samford, LSU and Central Arkansas
4 of the 5 matches have gone to 5 sets..kudos to Florida State for pulling out decisive wins in those 5th sets..they are showing great determination to take the match in those 5th sets although I would prefer they finish with sweeps or winning the 4th set.. the experience of having to fight in the 5th set for the win in pre-conference is giving them the opportunity to learn and build as a team.
GO NOLES !

The wins over a struggling Nebraska and mediocre Iowa State were a week ago. The jump up 5 spots was earned with 5-set wins at home over Florida and on road vs. Marquette and American. Time will tell how big those wins will actually be valued. I see two good wins here - @ Nebraska and Home vs. Florida.

I was wrong in my statement above .. 3 of the 5 matches went to 5 sets..(Florida, Marquette and American) Nebraska went to 4 and Iowa State was a sweep. Yes the matches @ Nebraska and home vs. Florida were indeed the 2 big matches.. Florida State has earned this #7 ranking

Sure, and the other three wins were against teams a 7-8 seed might expect to play in the second round of the tourny. No easy test coming up; six matches in nine days time with three against top30 sides.

@ Nebraska - Elite 8 @ Iowa State- First Round Florida - Second Round (who they knocked out last year) Marquette - Second Round @ American - Sweet 16
That might be the toughest first two weeks in the country
This week they finally get a couple of Average Joes in Samford and UCA, but they close the weekend with LSU who was in the 2nd Round last year.

Read on a post from awhile back....someone posted the FSU had the 3rd toughest pre conference schedule in the country. Coach Poole knows how to schedule..key is to win those matches for maximum benefit in RPI and to get ready for ACC conference play. I still predict it is going to be a battle at the top of the ACC with FSU, DUKE, UNC and Louisville. Louisville only has to play each of the top ACC teams 1 time... while UNC and Duke play each other twice.. FSU plays Duke and Louisville one time and plays UNC twice 15 teams in the ACC and no conference tournament..scheduling could be key to the winner of the ACC this year---IMO top teams should be scheduled to play each other home and away so there is equal opportunity. Louisville has the easiest road to the ACC Title this season.. they play bottom of the ACC teams twice.. more opportunity to rack up the most wins..and in the end it comes down to who has most wins in the ACC-- they are then Conference Title Champs.

#7 Florida State home this weekend hosting the Four Points Invitational vs. LSU, Samford and Central Arkansas
Scouting these teams looks like they are off to a good start in their early matches this season.
Coach Poole still working the line up with hitting options across front based on opponents. It is good he has options as this has helped in the long 5 set wins over Marquette and American last weekend. Of note was Karlie Hauer who came in and played both right side and OH at critical times in key sets of the matches
Also-- kudos to DS, Laura Dadowski for coming in and serving strong in critical times in matches vs. Florida, Marquette and American last week.
Any insight into these three opponents?
