I meant one injury leaving a team without a true setter available to play. I believe she was a starter as a freshman and pre-season All-Conference pick before getting hurt, perhaps making it tough to bring in someone else. I also believe UIC had a freshman hitter that started (16 kills against Valpo) before getting hurt mid-season as well. Injuries can make a big difference.

Time to make this painstakingly clear... If I remember correctly, Milwaukee didn't have another setter on the roster last season when Price got hurt. That. That's what I think shouldn't be able to happen as the result of one injury. Teams usually have at least 2 setters on their rosters, both in case of injury and, more simply, in an 'understudy' sort of situation.

You're right. Most teams have a plan for replacing their primary setter --- the roster might not always reveal the "who" even though that player is regularly getting reps and training at practice.
It seems like this team's challenges can be attributed to the loss of their setter PLUS the injuries to other key players, not necessarily the setter issue alone.
REALLY appreciate your work on these conference "rundowns" Very informative and fun to read.

Thank you, I appreciate your appreciation I also appreciate getting corrected when I pose something that's off-base, such as Milwaukee's setter situation. I have no clue how I'm gonna approach the next one. Almost nothing of the WAC is the same this coming year as last. The SWAG should really just be a WAG this time Whatever it will be, it will probably be up tomorrow. Really short beach day today, almost nothing to cover.

Again these are great and it starts the conversation on some of the lesser known conferences.

So for various reasons, the WAC piece took forever to throw together. I'm not gonna say this series was a bad idea, because I don't think it was, but it's WAY too much work for one person. I'll complete it, but the goal for the big conferences downstream is now to finish it before conference season begins.

So I'm very confused by Grand Canyon hosting the conference tournament. They are ineligible for the NCAA tournament. Every other conference I've ever noticed has not allowed ineligible teams to compete in their conference tournament. So is GCU hosting but not playing? Or are they playing and if so, what happens if they win? This seems very odd to me. Any WAC fans out there to solve this riddle?

Keep it going, I enjoy reading about all the conferences.

The tournament isn't on the Antelopes' own schedule, which certainly suggests they have no plans to play in it. But why would a non-playing institution host? There's logic to picking the site well in advance rather than making the top seeds host (just as there's logic in the reverse), but picking a team guaranteed not to be in the tournament? Doesn't make a lot of sense.

Ally! Did I just read that you have never seen a D1 match in person? And that you didn't play ten years of club? And that you're not a middle aged man who just loves the game and goes to every match possible as a passion?
OMG, no wonder this is so much work! Is this your first year doing this? What a huge undertaking! But, hopefully it will become easier next year.
In the meantime, do you take donations? How can we help compensate you for your efforts?

Ally! Did I just read that you have never seen a D1 match in person? Just one L (minor pet peeve). And yes. Of course, the only time I ever even set foot on a D-I campus was when I visited Washington State while still in high school. And that you didn't play ten years of club? Never played the game at all, actually. I suppose that puts me at a deficit in terms of understanding and analysis. Scratch that, I'm sure it does. But I will not mind spending a lifetime learning And that you're not a middle aged man who just loves the game and goes to every match possible as a passion? Uh, no. Not a middle aged man. But I do go to matches as much as I can. Money's more than a little tight, so that typically just means my hometown team, and even then only when I'm up to it (missed the rivalry game last year because of a dickens of a stomach flu). OMG, no wonder this is so much work! Is this your first year doing this? What a huge undertaking! But, hopefully it will become easier next year. TNS is still in its first year, yes. I launched 13 August last year, so it's almost time for a cake with one candle I don't imagine I'll do such a series as this next year. Not this vast in scope in anyway. In the meantime, do you take donations? How can we help compensate you for your efforts? That's....incredibly kind of you to offer. Thank you. I'm in line to receive ad revenues from Bloguin, though not until I've been a member for six months (it's only been about one so far -- and I don't know how much this will end up being anyway). I suppose something could be arranged if you'd truly like to do this. Probably best discussed via PM. Again, thank you, I'm sort of blown away by the offer.

Southland preview is up. 14 teams, wowzers. Is that the largest conference in the nation? I hope so!
