So I got through the untouchables on Monday, to kill a mockingbird on Tuesday and guess who's coming to dinner on Wednesday. Thinking the godfather part two on Thursday. I don’t recall GFII being on your list the other day. Correct. It sure was not. I forgot i had it. But at three hours and 22 minutes it's a whopper. Just finished one hour.

Enjoyed the untouchables (1987) last night. Had the pleasure of actually seeing it in the theatre. So which one of these would you watch next? I have all of them so.... 1. To kill a mockingbird 2. Gladiator 3. Sunset boulevard 4. Guess who's coming to dinner 5. Notorious 6. The Maltese falcon I love The Untouchables, but I feel that the movie score did not age well. I can barely listen to the music in that one. Wow, really? I think the score of The Untouchables is really good and very memorable, but to each their own.

So I've made it to two hours of the Godfather II and honestly, keep asking, how the hell did it win best picture? I guess I just don't find myself saying, "WOW, this is good." (Or great)

(Or great) Most discussions I've read on the internet favor part 2. Sight and Sound regularly includes both films on there decennial list of greatest films of all time, with The Godfather always rated higher, except for one time when they shared the same position. I prefer The Godfather, but it may just be that I've grown less and less willing to consume fare that aggrandizes the mafia, and I've just settled on The Godfather as the one that I'll allow myself to revisit for study from time to time.

It's beautiful during the courtroom scene at the very end of the movie but painful, for me, during the Ness/ Nitti rooftop scene.

Modern Times (1936) Charlie Chaplin. If you are like me and haven't given the silent film era it's due, Charlie Chaplin has been an enjoyable point of entry. There's a lot of depth, some very entertaining scenes, and closing a shot that strikes chords of romantic longing and satisfaction all at once. Also, that Chaplin cat sure can roller skate

Finished godfather part ii...not ridiculously violent compared to some TV shows or other movies. What may be more fascinating than the movie itself is the extras that come with it.

I finally watched Top Gun: Maverick I'd resisted because I never got into the first one (started watching it to give me some background going into the second one, but lost interest and didn't finish it) I found the second one really enjoyable.

All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)
Fantastic war movie. It's a German movie that was nominated for Best Picture Oscar. Captures the absolute misery and hopelessness of war from the POV of German soldiers in the trenches of WWI. Loved it from start to finish. I read the novel in high school but was absolutely bored with it. I saw a film adaptation in the 1970s and was bored with that, too. This 2022 film, however, is art.
Among the recent releases, the best war movies are:
1917 Dunkirk All Quiet on the Western Front
Nothing beats 1917.

Some of my favorites from a little further back are Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers (not a movie, I know). If you go further back, I liked Apocalypse Now (except for the Brando part), Full Metal Jacket, Platoon & Deerhunter (half war, half fallout). I'm sure that I'm forgetting a few.

I watched The Holdovers over the weekend. I thought it was an excellent film and Paul Giamotti did a great job.

West Side Story (2021)
Directed by Steven Spielberg. Nominated for Best Picture Oscar. My question is: Why remake this film at all? The original was great already. And this remake uses almost all (if not all) of the original music.
A box office disaster due to many complicated factors. Go read about it on wikipedia and online articles.

Add ‘Coming Home’ and you’ve hit my favorite Vietnam movies. ‘Apocalypse Now’ is a top 5 all time for me. Liked the Brando scene ... “Are you an assassin...”

Finally caught Oppenheimer two weeks ago and finished Killers of the Flower Moon last night.
I'm always down for Scorsese and I thoroughly enjoyed KOTFM, but Mrs Merv and I had to take it in over three nights and I think that hurt the viewing experience a little. I'm a massive, massive Jason Isbell fan and it was fun and weird to see him play such a big role in the film. Leo and DeNiro are so good as villains you wish they would do it more. I thought it was DeNiro's best work in years and Lily Gladstone is tremendous.
Oppenheimer I loved. Maybe Nolan's best film, period.
